Kayla Richardson closes in on Philippine JR Records

kayla richardson

15 year old Fil-Heritage sprinter Kayla Richardson recorded two incredible arks 11.79 (+0.7), and 23.84 (+2.1).

The First year high schooler from Etiwanda High had an awesome day at Div 1 CIF Preliminaries in the 100m finishing third in her heat and qualifying 7th overall for the CIF Finals. Her 200m time albeit wind aided was the fastest qualifying time in her division.  Kayla then helped her team win the 4×400 in 3:47.07 #2 in the state clocking 55.00 on her leg of the relay.

Kayla’s time were remarkable 11.79 improved her season lead of 11.93 which she shared with twin sister Kyla. 11.79 is the 6th fastest time ever by a Filipina and only .04s outside the junior mark set by Princess Joy Griffey in 2004 with 11.75. Born in 1998 Kayla has until 2017 to improve this mark. Kayla official best time was 12.46 last year an incredible break through in one season.

Click here to view all time Filipina List 100m List

Her 200m mark of 23.84 although wind aided +2.1, means she is capable of breaking 24 seconds now with a legitimate tail wind. Only Lydia De Vega has ever ran faster than this time of all Filipina’s. De Vega mark of 23.54 is the National Junior Record. Kayla coach John Gilmer of the Academy of Speed said “Kayla should hopefully be able to break that”.

Another fact is her times are now very close to the SEA Games bronze standards of 11.73 and 24.06. Certainly her 23.84 is even beyond the 24.01 silver medal, the gold medal was 23.65 at SEA Games.

However it is incredibly unfair how the IAAF/SEA Games commitee now have decided to introduce a minimum 16 rule meaning Kayla would miss out on competing in the SEA Games when she is good enough to medal. An appeal must be sent to the organizing commitee to allow her to participate as we now have another female sprinter good enough to match it with our SEA rivals.

*The Richardson twins have submitted dual citizenship documents to PATAFA and are in the process of submitting Passports.

Fil-Heritage Athletes Philippine Passports and 2013 Ranking List Criteria (rev 2)

patafa logo

As I get a lot of queries by athletes of what they need in order to represent the Philippines this will save me a lot of time from having to relay repetitive generic information. This compulsory requirement has been endorsed by our National Sports Association, Philippine Track and Field Association (PATAFA). To make the system transparent it is also now the criteria for rankings, records sand representation.

Please forward a scanned copy to pinoyathletics@gmail.com

.

Fil-Heritage athletes must present a Filipino Passport to be eligible for the following.

.

  1. Any Filipino Record or Filipino Junior Record that they surpass.
  2.  Representation for the Philippines, if they meet the performance qualification criteria
  3.  Inclusion into the 2013 Ranking Lists if they exceed the standards required.

.

Anyone who is serious about representing the Philippines will obtain a Filipino Passport in order to do so. It takes around 3-6 weeks and costs around $100-200 USD/AUD.  I do not guarantee that all overseas Fil Heritage athletes will be eligible for a Filipino Passport.

1. 11 filipina women have broken 12s et. officially.

2. 5 of these times were ran prior to 2000, with 4 gintong alay athletes and 1 pre gintong alay athlete.

3. 6 local based women ran below 12s with the last being Lerma B. Gabito in 2002, she ran sub 12s until 2004. Lerma was the last local filipina sprinter in the 100m who was good enough to place top 3 at SEA Games.

4. None of these women ran a PB past the age of 30. Gabito and Ganosa were the oldest both at 28 and Kyla and Kayla who are still active are the youngest who ran these time at 15.

The Need for Electronic Timing after protest filed in Mens 100m at Palaro

Hand Timing or Stopwatch Timing

Hand Timing or Stopwatch Timing

Article by Pirie Enzo, with contributions from National 100 and 200m Record Holder Ralph Waldy

Before i continue i would like to refer to a previous article i wrote which differentiates Hand timing and Electronic Timing.

article below
.

i would like to see a clearer video. Ironically the stupid news writing blocks the view of the last frame of the crossing the line hence ruining the quality of the news video. I can tell due to the closeness of 1 and 2 there is no way that is a .2 difference of 11.1 and 11.3 .2 is around one or two strides.

To be honest the times in the final of the Palaro were a lot slower than the semi finals. Several coaches hand timed the top two athletes at around 10.8 and 10.9. Which begs into question the accuracy of the hand timing of the officials at the Palaro and whether we can really count these performances as certifiable by the IAAF.

Not trying to take anything away from the accomplishments of the athletes as winning a Palaro title (National High school) is still a big achievement for a young athlete. However there may have been cases where an athlete is robbed of a place or an accurate time. I’m not saying that this is an example of this as i need to see a clearer video than the one provided.

I cant make an accurate decision on if Nor actually won without seeing a better video. But what I do know is a lot of countries use electronic timing at HS and even at weekly meets. Its much fairer for the athletes if they have a photo finish in place.

.

We need to introduce Electronic timing and Photo Finish to the Palaro and other meets

That is why hand timing should never be really acknowledged. I mean, we are year 2013 already. Everything is on the technology age – why is it that a national HS competition still uses hand timing instead of electronic timing? Budget issues? Very shallow answer. Someone who’s in authority should lobby that to PSC and PATAFA should strongly push for this too.

Deped is in charge of the palaro not PATAFA or PSC anymore. Deped undoubtedly has the funds to hire an electronic system. I looked into the cost of electronics purchasing the equipment is atleast 60,000 USD. DEPED does have the budget to allocate towards hiring electronics. They just do not understand the importance as they are not as well informed as the PSC or PATAFA on sports.

Electronic Timing system is cheaper than that actually. I have a quotation from finish line coz were supposed to purchase that to support PATAFA events. If PATAFA can commit to us to convince other meets to use the system for at least 20 meets in a year then we can probably reconsider that previous plan. This should be a partnership with PATAFA project.

Sarah Vitug edged closer to the Filipino National Record with another personal best of 4:27.65 winning heat 6 at the Mt Sac Relays. Vitug who is currently trying to obtain a Filipino passport was just outside the national record of 4:24.87 of Marietta T. Magno set 24 years ago at Changhua. Vitug is hoping to compete at the PNG. Vitug in order to qualify for the SEA Games needs to not just break the Phi Record but match the bronze standard of 4:21.

Monticalvo surpasses the Filipino Record in Pole Vault

April 15, 2013 1 comment
Monticalvo and Alorro are on a campaign to return the gold medal to the Philippines in the mens Pole Vault.

Monticalvo continued progressive streak to 5.05m means he is not completely out of question for a SEA Games Gold.

Fil-Heritage athlete Caleb Monticalvo soared to a new personal best on Saturday 14/04/13 vaulting 5.05m at the Chico Distance and Twilight Carnival in California. The performance is the second time he has exceeded the standing national record of 1991,1993,1995 SEA Games Champion and 1996 Olympian Edward Lasquette.

However recognition of the record is pending awaiting submission of Philippine Passport which Caleb is currently processing.

Regardless it is good to see the strong legacy of Pole Vaulting paved by legendary athletes such as Edward Lasquette continuing in the country with new names arising.

Monticalvo whose father is Filipino and mother is Italian  hails from San Jose, California. Monticalvo ironically also hails from California as his home town is San Diego.

On Saturday he took out the ‘John Lipsey Pole Vault’ event with second well beaten with 4.72m. It was the second time Monticalvo has exceeded the Filipino National Record his previous best of 5.03m done at the CCAA Champs last May, ranked him second in SEA behind SEA Games Champion Kreetha of Thailand last year.

Kreetha of Thailand with a personal best of the 5.24m is the man to beat at SEA Games, with Iskandar of Malaysia 5.01m also in medal contention.

It will be an exciting competition at the National Games with Monticalvo, and fellow vaulter Fil-Heritage Alorro leading a cast of around 16 vaulters in the mens division at the National Games. (draft schedule here)
