Isidro Del Prado: Legacy of the quarter mile

January 10, 2013 2 comments

By Pirie Enzo with insights by Ignacio Dee

In the early 80s a young  man emerged who would take the Mens 400m dash further than any Filipino that came before him. He  set a new bench mark  in this event until today his performance of 45.57 remains the Filipino National Record 28 years later and still a respectable time at international level. More importantly though was in turn he created a legacy guiding and inspiring the next generation of athletes to SEA Games championships in his pet event.  Finding those who were brave enough to endure the grueling quarter mile.

Isidro Del Prado

Isidro Del Prado the Greatest Quarter Miler in Filipino Track and Field History

Isidro Del Prado was born May 15, 1959 in Cagang, Barcelona, Sorsogon. He stood at 5’9 73kg in his prime.

Del Prado went to the ASEAN School Games in 1979 aged 20. At that stage he was not yet a 400m runner he was entered in the 800m dash with a best time of 1:55.0. By  far the fastest competitor in the race with ASEAN Record standing at 1:57.3.

‘Del’ to family, friends and athletes, del Prado is best remembered for becoming one of the two most successful athletes the country has produced under Project: Gintong Alay during martial law. This project was based largely on the multi-million dollar venture of the Australian Sports system.

The other one was former Asian sprint queen Lydia de Vega, who became the face of the project, a training program copied and envied by several Southeast Asian countries in the 80s.

“It was a good program. It produced results,” said Del Prado in regards to the Gintong Alay.

.

Del Prado vs Rabuan Pit

Del Prado now advised to focus as well on the 400m won the unique double (reminiscent of Cuban Alberto Juantorena 1976 Olympic double victory)  at the 800 meter run in 1:48.79 in 1981. It would be exactly 20 years till another Filipino would win the Men’s 800m a the SEA Games.

isidro del prado 1981 sea games

1981 SEA Games Final.

He also set the 400m in a New SEA Games Record in 47.10, very narrowly holding off defending SEA Games Champion  Rabuan Pit of Malaysia who in a blanket finish who clocked in at 47.15.  Del Prado would defeat Pit again at the ASEAN Cup in Kuala Lumpur in November of 1982 47.1 to 47.3.

.

Asian Champion but Jadi steals the SEA Games Crown

His time of A few weeks later Del Prado made the final of the 800m at the Asian Games in 1982.

His travels the following year took him to Australia in March due to his Gintong Alay boss Michael Keon connection, he placed second in the 400m at the Australian National Championships in 46.38.

Del Prado would defend his SEA Games title in 1983 with a time of 46.40. He would also capture his first Asian title that year in Kuwait with a time of 46.24 holding off Aouf Abdulrahman Yousef of Iraq (46.74) the bronze medalist from the previous Asian Championships and upcoming (46.76) Mohammed Abdin Jadi of Malaysia who would later deprive Del Prado of his SEA Games titles.

isidro del prado kuwait

Del Prado ran at the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki but did not advance placing fourth in his heat in 46.92.

Del Prado ran at the 1984 Olympic Games placing third in his heat in 46.82, which was good enough to qualify for the quarter final in which he finished last in 46.71.

The Famous Victory of the Bicol Express in 1985 in the Mens 4×400 in a record of 3:06.58 at the Bangkok SEA Games in 1985 remains untouched till this day. Del Prado teamed up with Romeo Gido, Honesto Larce and Marlon Pagaliluan. It would be 20 years before the Philippines would recapture the SEA Games title in this event. However Del Prado lost his SEA Games title pulling up in the heat in 49.01 and not contesting the final but was able to run the 4×400 two days later.

The Bicol Express

After losing his SEA Games title to Jadi 46.56 to 46.78, Del successfully defended his Asian title that year improving to 45.61, holding off Mohammed Al-Malki of Oman 46.45 who later would claim the title in 1987 with Yousef third in 46.67.

Del Prado never won a gold at the Asian Games however he did capture Golds at Asian Track and Field. He clocked 45.96 in the 1986 Asian Games to place second to defending champion Susumu Takano of Japan who defended his title he had won in 1982.

.

SEA Games Champion one last time and moving on

It took him six years to regain it in 1989 with a time of 47.20 and put Jadi of Malaysia who had won the last two sea games  well and truly behind him (47.89).  Del Prado would also make a return to the 800m clocking 1:49.34 for Silver by Samson Vellabouy of Malaysia.

Isidro was coached by the Australian Anthony ‘Tony’ Benson during the Gintong Alay era. Who stated this about his former ward on his website.

Isidro was one of the most talented athletes I ever had the privilege of coaching. With a 45.6/400m pb and great natural endurance he was a potential sub 1:40 minute 800m runner. Moving forward I’m very proud he became the Philippines Head Coach.

When benson left in 1982, he came under Marcelo Langurayan, a former 800 and 1500 national champion in the late 1960s. langurayan, who retired as a police chief superintendent (the military rank equivalent is one star general), stayed until 1986.

For several years Isidro Del Prado was the head coach of the Philippine team guiding Ernie Candelario (2001,2003) and Jimar Aing (2005) to SEA Games gold in the 400m. After which he took a role as Brunei Coach in 2009 where he has guided Hafiti Rositi to a national record (ref spin.ph).

Asian Athletes Limited by Genes or Nurture?

(Dec 27) A debate on the prospects of Asian athletes in American sports passes without mention of Yao Ming, the Shanghai Sharks’s 7-6, 265-pound center who recently led China to an 83-82 upset over the U.S. His prospects as the likely top pick of the 2002 NBA draft have been trumpeted by no lesser authorities than Michael Jordan and Bill Walton.

But the 21-year-old superstar is literally one in a billion (1.25 billion to be exact). Young Yao is the product, genetically and culturally, of a 6-10 father and 6-4 mother, both of whom played basketball for China’s national teams. His case is as likely to confuse the nature-vs-nurture debate as to help resolve it. After all, his height may be merely the tip of the genetic iceberg when it comes to his promise as a world-class basketballer.

More familiar to Asian Americans are Michael Chang (5-9) who won the French Open at age 17, and Ichiro Suzuki (5-9), whose batting and base-stealing have lifted the Mariners from the basement to the heavens. Both seem endowed with standard physical equipment but have outperformed more powerful physiques. And on the women’s side Kristi Yamaguchi, Michele Kwan, Seri Pak and legions of Chinese divers and gymnasts have shown that champions needn’t be amazons.

But these successes haven’t silenced those who argue that as a race Asians lack the genetic gifts to challenge black and white athletes in power sports. Asians are genetically smaller and weaker, they claim, and can only excel in sports calling for quickness and agility. They cite Asian underrepresentation in track and field, football, basketball, soccer, tennis, boxing and the like.

Will the future mirror the past? Are we genetically limited to excelling only in a few select sports or will changing social and economic conditions produce a generation of Asian superstars across the sports spectrum?

Indian Athlete in Gender Dispute Charged with Rape

KOLKATA, India:pinki pramanik gender rape

(Dec) Indian police on Monday charged an international gold medal-winning athlete with raping her former partner after medical tests showed she was actually a man. Pinki Pramanik, who retired in 2007 after winning team gold in the 4x400m relay at the 2006 Asian Games, was charged after a report was completed by a medical board set up to determine her gender. “Medical tests have confirmed that Pinki is not a female,” B.N. Kahali, chairman of the board, told Agence France-Presse. “Pinki is a male pseudo-hermaphrodite. We have submitted the medical report to the district sessions court.” Male pseudo-hermaphrodites are genetic males who develop some female physical characteristics and identities. AFP

Singapore 6-medals

singapore mens 4x100m relay

The same 4 runners who got the silver in the 2011 SEA Games for Singapore, won in Malaysia. Hoping to cause an upset over Thailand in 2013 and take the title.

When discussing with a high ranking member of the Singapore Athletics Association. Singapore definitely has the funding and structure but lacks the manpower (4-5 million population). Quite the opposite of the Philippines which has the manpower (89 million people) but does not have the structure and funding to utilize all that man power as of yet but is making steps towards this.

Singapore will target four golds in the SEA Games with Mens and Womens Shotput, possibly the walks and an upset of the Thai’s in the 4×100 in consideration.

The Singaporean Mens Team claimed an easy victory from the locals in a time of 40.30s.  The Team of Cheng Wei, Jamal Amirudin, Muhammed Elfi Mustapa and Gary Yeo took the gold enroute to what could perhaps be a chance at a gold medal come the SEA Games.

Sahana Kumari Indian High Jumper

Sahana Kumari

(Sep 16) Chennai, India – The 52nd edition of the Indian National Open championships, last of this season’s senior competitions and held in the post-Olympic period, drew little attention from top guns but some good performances by enthusiastic juniors made it a lively four days (10-13 September) of competition.

The championships, held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here, venue for next year’s Asian championships, witnessed only two meet marks being bettered — both in the High Jump.

Singapore National Games Results

Scott Wong one of the rising stars of Singapore Athletics won Gold in Shotput and Discus (Photo Credits: Singaporeathletics.com)

(Sep 8) After holding their invitational open meet. Singapore is currently completing its own National Games for Singaporean Athletes only.

This would be a very good idea for Philippines Track and Field (PATAFA) to hold a National Open (for all entries) and a week after the National Games (for Filipino athletes only).

It was amazing to see in the sprint events how many with-drawls they had. In most cases everybody qualified straight to the next round and the Semi-Final. It brings into question why they didn’t just request the competitors just come straight back to the semi-final. Due to this competitors just needed to jog through the preliminary rounds to make the finals.

Olympian Gary Foo Yeo won the 100m in 10.84 (-0.8) somewhat off his personal best time, just ahead of Lee Cheng Wei 10.89 and Elfi Mustafa 10.98. Wei later got back at Yeo winning 21.97 to 22.09 (-1.1) with Elfi again in third in 22.50.

Scott Wong took the Mens Shotput with a Personal Best of 15.89m. Scott the upcoming 22 year old threw 47.77m in the Discus ahead of Ming Su 40.56m

Representing NMRAA in local, regional and national school meets. A women who truly loved representing her country and the sport of Track and Field. Mrs Lusterio was overshadowed by other great athletes of her time her career spanned the entire 1970s. However Nanette holds her own place in Philippine Track and Field History. Her feats include the fact she held the Philippine Junior Record (1.63m) in the Junior Womens High Jump for 21 years from 1972 to 1993. A very popular and charismatic athlete who will be dearly missed by her friends, her peers firmly believe she deserves a place among the greats of our sport.
