The surprise winner was North Korea’s Kim Kum Ok. Delos Santos was the highest placed entry from South East Asia. The SEA Games bronze medal standard is 2h48.63.

IAAF Rules Richardson Twins too young for WYC. Eyes on RP Team for SEA Games.

October 31, 2012 3 comments

Due to the popular response from the Athletic Community in regards to my original article on the Richardson twins.  I have decided to post a followup or progress report in regards to these two Fil-Heritage sprinters.  Mr Richardson was very happy at the cooperation from PATAFA, PSC and athletic community on this matter. Kyla who also plays volleyball now seems very excited for the upcoming track season which will start next month. Likewise her twin sister Kayla who is also a capable sprinter albeit not quite yet as technically fluent as Kyla also shows a lot of promise.

.

Twins are ‘Too Young’ to compete at WYC

We will start with the Bad News, I was alerted that the World Youth Championships held in 2013 in Ukraine, the IAAF had changed the rules in the 2011 meet. The rule change means athletes must be 16 or 17 years old in order to participate and they now will not allow younger athletes to compete. This is bad news for the two 14-year old twins as they are born in 1998 and it means they are not eligible under the IAAF rules. I sent an email to the IAAF to confirm this and this is what i got back. Essentially what the IAAF is saying is that the twins are ‘Too young’ to participate. However there does nto seem a way around it as the IAAF is the world governing body and they seem very firm on that decision.

.

Dear Sir/Madam,

As per our rules, athletes aged 16 or 17 years on 31 December 2013 (born in 1996 or 1997), may compete in any event.

Thus athletes born in 1998 will not be entitled to compete, no exception will be allowed.

Best regards,

Céline

.

Twins had Easily Made the Standards

This is very unfortunate news, as the twins had both gone well understand the standards set by the IAAF. Kyla had recorded 12.00 and 24.12, the standards where 12.50 and 25.50. Therefore she was .5 and 1.38s below the criteria which would have been good enough for a semi-finals berth in the 200m, and with a slight improvement a semi-finals berth in the 100m. Kayla had ran 12.46 and 24.99 which is also under the standard by .04 and .51 seconds respectivally. The twins are the only athletes to make the qualifying standard for the Philippines for the World Youths (which began in 2001), previous entries for the Philippines had relied on wild cards. Mr Richardson had expressed before his daughters were so dedicated to representing the Philippines that the family was prepared to self fund the trip to the Ukraine for the world youths.

.

A Wave of Support

The PATAFA had been very helpful in assisting the twins entry to the World Youth Champs and where prepared to setup dialogue with Mr Richardson upon submission of necessary paper work, which is still going to push through. If possible another suitable Asian or ASEAN youth or junior level meet will be considered for the twins. Kyla is currently the #1 Filipina Sprinter in the 100m and 200m in 2012, while Kayla is ranked #8 in the 100m (comprehensive list includes local and fil-heritage athletes). Not only did the PATAFA express interest in the twins a lot of ex-national athletes had a lot of kind words of encouragement to offer.

National Womens 100m and 200m Record Holder and Athletic Legend Lydia De Vega based in Singapore stated”Im happy for Kyla and Kayla Congratulations!”,

whereas Former Junior joint record holder Chantal Balani now based in Hong Kong stated “They are so fast, they will be good on the 4×100″.

As a testament to the legendary De Vega, it is proof an athlete of her ability only comes along once in a life time, as her junior records have stood for 30 years. But perhaps the twins can continue the legacy.

If Kyla and/or Kayla can qualify for the SEA Games next year in Myanmar at 15 years of age they will definitely follow in the foot steps of Elma Muros and Lydia De Vega who where just 14 and 15 year olds when they made there SEA Games Debut. Fortunately for the twins the SEA Games has no age restrictions.

.

Potentiol 4×100 Junior Record

The twins will be participating at the Philippine National Games in the Junior 100m and 200m next May. Last year Hypersports line up of Michelle Loterte, Jennyrose Rosales, Neslee Angco and Maureen Emily Schrivjers won the PNG in (49.36) this time was shy of the National Junior Record of 48.65. For 2013 Loterte (born 1993) is already in the senior division.

However if a lineup of Rosales, Schrivjers, and the twins form they could obliterate the old record potentially. Rosales (94) (12.34), Schrivjers (95) (12.68), with Kyla (98) (12.00) and Kayla (12.46). The twins combinded 100m times are 1.5s faster than Loterte and Angco during the National Games. With that logic they are looking at atleast a time of 49.36 – 1.5 which is 47.8et.

However this is before even considering any improvements the four girls make over the next 7-8 months.

SEA Games

Kyla whose best time is just .06 seconds this year from the SEA Games qualification bronze mark of 24.06 for the Womens 200m, leads the women’s ranking list in the 100 and 200m dash this year.

If Kyla can make the standard she will be the youngest member of the RP Team at 15 years of age to qualify for SEA Games Track and Field in 2013. Elma Muros and Lydia De Vega were both 14 and 15 when they made there debuts at the SEA Games.   The twins are also eying a spot at the Asian Youth Games in China next June  if possible following a similar path to Lydia and Elma where it all began for them at the ASEAN Schools.

The Womens 200m at the SEA Games is currently led by Vu Thi Thuong of Vietnam a 3 time winner of the 100m and former 200m Champion at the SEA Games. Vu has registered 23.30 so far this year. According to SEA Statiscian Jad Adrian Washif a time of 24 flat or faster is good enough to medal. Perhaps Kyla can go one further than the two legends above and take open some shiny medal in 2013 in Myanmar.

How to Avoid Vomiting or Throwing up after 400 Meters

October 22, 2012 2 comments

Article from speedendurance.com

.

Otherwise, here are my 7 tips to prevent throwing up after a hard workout or race:

  1. Food.  The closer to race time, the less you should eat.   I give myself 4 hours to fully digest a regular meal with regular C/F/P ratios such as a Club Sandwich.  You are better off to go to practice slightly hungry, and have a power bar between the run and the weights.
  2. Food.  The closer to race time, the less fat you should eat because it takes longer to digest.  Plain bagels are great snacks if you must eat.  Learn to read labels, especially packaged bars.
  3. Pepto-bismol tablets.  Before, this only came in bottles, but now you can buy it in pill form.  Simply pop 1 or 2 before your race.  Experiment with a time trial or hard workout first.  Pepto-bismol works great if you have diarrhea, too.   If you travel overseas, this is a must-have addition, especially Mexico, Cuba or India.
  4. Ginger slices.  Place them under tongue if you can stand the “spice” effect.  Works great for pregnant and expecting mothers.
  5. Deep breathing (read my article here).  Breathing helps oxidize and flush out the lactic acid, too.  That’s why a cool down is important in the 400m, no matter how bad you feel.
  6. Water, or Gatorade cut with water.  Pure Gatorade (or any other electrolyte drink) is too sweet and may possibly “sit” in your stomach longer.  Whatever you drink throughout the year should be the same on race day.  When in doubt, cut it with water.
  7. If you are going to supplement your 400 meters with bicarbonate loading, then consider using antacids like TUMS or ROLAIDS which will have a two-fold effect of both soda-loading and help keep your tummy in check.

Philippine Mens 400m Final Ranking List 2012

October 17, 2012 2 comments

Edgardo Alejan wins the silver medal in Hong Kong in the 400m.

It is my hope that this data will help the organization. These will be released every week to two weeks.Feel free to post any comments, questions, additions or corrections to this page, pinoyathletics@gmail.com or the Facebook Group.

  • The Criteria cut off for the 400M 50.0 (ht) and 50.14 (et)

.

The 400m is the only sprint event where the Philippine men really feature in. Having won several titles over the years including Isidro Del Prado who was an asian champion. The Philippines enjoyed a streak of  SEA Games Champions from 2001-2007 with Ernie Candelario  (2001 & 2003), Jimar Aing (2005) and Julius Nierras (2007). The streak came to an end in the 2009 SEA Games, however 21 year-old Archand Bagsit finished with a closely fought silver in 2011.

Bagsit, Alejan, Bano and Nierras also were promoted to the gold medal at the SEA Games after Malaysia was disqualified when one of the four runners tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Bagsit leads this season scoring a new personal best of 47.44 during the Thailand Grand Prix. His consistent streak of sub 48 runs means he is probably the favorite for the sea games gold.  The other runners have a bit more work to do to make the second individual spot for SEA Games the standard sits at (47.97).

Cid was the major change on the list he improved his personal best to 48.05 in the decathlon in Thailand, and ran faster than the three entered in the individual event Bagsit, Alejan and Nierras. Certainly as it looks the relay will be Bagsit, Cid, Alejan and Nierras. The total is around 3:12 based on seasons best now which is still only in Bronze medal contention.

Alejan improved his best time to 48.41 getting second in the Hong Kong nationals and new kid Cid who is aiming to make the Decathlon qualifier also ran a new personal best of 48.44 getting third at the Singapore Nationals, Nierras who placed fourth in Singapore improved his seasonal best to 48.51 a much better run than his performance at the PNG.

Other runners such as Junrey Bano who has already qualified for SEA Games in the Hurdles and Isidro Del Prado Jr. (49.01) who was second at the National Games must beat the fourth placed time of 48.51 to qualify for the relay.

The Standard for this year was 50.0 and 50.14et and is being lowered to 49.8 and 50.0et. However the Philippines is not close to its mens list of 2005 when they had seven sprinters, five locals Candelario, Aing, Nierras, Tanuan, and Marfill and two fil-heritage athletes Kashus Perona and John Alipio run below 48 seconds that year.

*Please note that these names listed above, are still due for approval for funding by the PSC.

Missing from the list is Olympian Marestella Torres and SEA Games Medalists Eduardo Buenavista and Eric Panique. Apart from that every other SEA Games medalists have been included for this meet.

A strong Mens 4×400 lineup of Bagsit, Bano, Alejan and Nierras who won the SEA Games Gold will be looking at challenging some of the best in Asia. While newcomer Cid who will be the alternate for the 4×400 will be focussing on going after the SEA Games qualification in the Decathlon.

A Womens 4×400 lineup of Pedrina, Malacad, Olarita and Rosales will be hoping to get the ball rolling for the Womens 4×400 squad to qualify for SEA Games although along way from the standard right now. A modest performance of 57.5 per runner would yield a 3m50 result for the young team.

Lasangue who did not qualify for the last sea games but has made the bronze medal standard with a 2.10m jump at the PNG will need to improve his best leap to 2.15m+ to stand a chance at winning a bronze medal at the next SEA Games.

Billones, Capispan, Loterte and Noval will be having there first outing as part of the National Team. 19 year-old Noval is going for the Junior Record of Ralph Soguilon which is 10.82s, he was just .02s off that at the NCAA.

Also attending but not funded by the PSC/PATAFA will be Maureen Schrivjers and Adel Valdecanas.

27-man Pinoy track team off to Bangkok tourney

From the Manila Times, By Emil C. Noguera Oct 31

Olympic Champion Mo Farah with SEA Games 3ks Champion Rene Herrera at the London Olympic Games.

.The Philippines will be sending a strong 27-member national track and field team for the Thailand Open Track and Field Championships 2012 slated on November 2 to 5 at the Thammassat University Sports Complex in Bangkok.

Olympian and five-time Southeast Asian Games steeplechase champion Rene Herrera banners the men’s team that also include veteran campaigners Junrey Bano, Edgardo Alejan, Julius Nierras, Arniel Ferrera, Danilo Fresnido, Benigno Marayag, Manuel Lasangue, Julius Sermona, and Archand Christian Bagsit, Mervin Guarte, Eliezer Sunang, Jordan Paul Billones, Juliam Reem Fuentes, Jesson Ramil Cid, Raycris Capispisan, Francisco Valdecana and Ernest Guevarra.

Seeing action in the women’s division are Indonesia Southeast Asian Games bronze medalist Katherine Santos, Maureen Schrijvers, Loralie Sermona, Keizel Pedrina, Wenlie Maulas, Josie Malacad, Lorna Olarita, Michelle Loterte and former Palarong Pambansa standout Jenyrose Rosales.

“It’s a good opportunity to gauge their skills against some of the region’s finest tracksters in preparation for the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar,” said Philippine Track and Field Association President Go Teng Kok.

The Filipino tracksters won one gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the 74th Singapore Open Track & Field Championships 2012 in August with middle-distance runner Sermona accounting for the country’s lone gold medal.

.

Some corrections to this news article

Francisco Valdecena shouldnt it be Adel

For some reason Ernest Obiena and Coach Sean Guevarra have been merged into one person.

Heard Schrijvers is not going.

And last but not least Wenlie Maulas has for the second time by the Manila Times been made into a GIRL! AGAIN!

.

*Henry Dagmil had to pull out of the trip due to an ankle injury, and Mau Schrijvers who was self funding was also unable to attend.

PART 3: Thailand Day 1 Report, Noval Breaks Junior Record

Continued from Part 2: Schedule and Writeups

*Videos and Results provided by Coach Roselyn Hamero

.

Noval 10.74!

It was only a matter of time as well as the last chance for 19 year-old sprinter NCAA Champion Daniel Noval to erase the National Junior Record of his mentor Ralph Waldy Soguilon (10.82) . Soguilon later went on to become the National Record Holder in the 100m before an injury ended his career back in 2007. Noval easily won the 9th heat of the Boys 100m in a time of 10.79et. This mark was equal to the wind-aided mark of another Filipino Junior Rolando Lampa back in 1994.

Noval came back in the afternoon to erase this record again finishing third in the boys semi finals in 10.74et. The two other athletes who finished ahead of him from Thailand clocked 10.63et and 10.72et. Noval has qualified for the final which will be on Sunday. It is due to be a fast Junior Final as the winner at this event last year clocked 10.67et which has already been surpassed by the winner of Noval’s semi final.

Noval who was a palaro champion twice in this event, NCAA Champion twice and then Uni Games Champion recently, oddly enough had not competed at a Philippine National Championship meet and this was his first overseas meet.

This was Daniel’s last chance to break the junior record as he will be turning 20 next year, and its the only electronically timed meet he will be competing in this year. Daniel Noval has completed his mission for Thailand.

.

Other Sprinters qualify

Noval was part of the largest contingent of Filipino athletes to participate at an national invitational overseas meet part of a successful 27 athlete contingent.

It was good to see the coaches/admin choosing to enter the junior athletes in the junior division rather than forcing them to run in open age which has obviously paid off now as a good judgement call and overall the selection of the team overall was a good lineup.

Looking at the Junior heats their was more of them and they were of higher quality than a Philippine National Championship meet.

Meanwhile in a straight semi final PNG Silver medalist Hanelyn Loquinto took 0.05 seconds off her personal best from the PNG to qualify for the womens 100m Final finishing third in her heat in 12.33s.

While in the Junior Division UAAP and JR National Champion Jennyrose Rosales won heat 7 in 12.55s. Rosales was luckyto qualify last going into the final of the womens 100m with a slightly improved time of 12.50 finishing 5th in her semi final which was won in 12.18s (2nd fastest qualifier).

Meanwhile in the Womens 400m. Josie Malacad in Heat 2 was the fastest of the three Filipina entries, the Uni Games and UAAP Champion clocked 57.03s to finish second in a fast heat won by a Sri Lankan in 55.72s. National Champion Keizel Pedrina finished second in heat 2 running a relaxed 57.67s for 2nd place behind another Sri Lankan and also qualified for the final. National Silver medalist and PRISAA Champion Lorna Olarita was unlucky to finish third in heat 1 in 58.89s missing out on the final by 2 spots or .08s. Malacad, Olarita and Pedrina will join with Jennyrose in the 4x400m Relays on Sunday. The 400m finals is tommorow.

In the Mens 400m all three athletes qualified to the Final SEA Games Silver Medalist Bagsit won heat 1 of 400m in 48.78, Alejan finished 3rd in heat 2 in 48.92, a Sri Lankan won his heat in 48.22 and was the fastest qualifier, 33 year old 2007 SEA Games Champion Nierras finished second in heat 2 in 49.41.

Medals for Guarte, Santos, Amahit, Obiena and Marayag

SEA Games Silver medalist Mervin Guarte finished second in the Mens 1500m in 3:57.67 behind Van Lai Nguyen of Vietnam who is the SEA Games Bronze medalist in the 5k and 10k. Guarte was off his season best of 3:55.85 he ran at Almaty and his National Record of 3:47.65 he ran at the SEA Games. Mohd Jironni Riduan who finished last at the sea games final in the 800m got the bronze for Malaysia. The other Filipino entry UAAP Champion Wenlie Maulas finished seventh in 4:07.90.

SEA Games silver medalist Katherine Khay Santos finished with bronze in 5.64m behind Two Thais, however this was well below her season best of 6.19m at the National Games. Perhaps the danger for the Philippines will be Maria Londa of Indonesia who has leapt 6.55m this year, who is probably going to be the biggest challenge for 4 time sea games champion Marestella Torres.

SEA Games Bronze Medalist Amahit was well off her National Record with a 41.50 throw but managed to salvage the bronze medal.

It was a wise decision for National Junior Record Holder EJ Obiena who is on the comeback trail from a broken bone injury to compete in the Juniors where he improved 5cm on his Uni Games Vault with 4.25m to get silver in the Boys Pole Vault the winner leapt 4.72m.

Manuel Lasangue leapt 2.08m in the High Jump to take the silver, Reycris Capispan was fifth with 1.95m.

SEA Gmes Bronze medalist Ninoy Marayag equalled his season best leap of 7.37m in the Long Jump that he did at the PNG to win the Bronze.

In the 10k veteran Julius Sermona did not register a mark after not finishing the race. 2009 SEA Games Champion and National Record Holder Danilo Fresnido was back in sixth place with 63.50m in the Mens Javelin.

Novals Reactions to his Junior Record

“I know I did not win the gold but it is such a great feeling to win the bronze medal out of the 108 particpants in the 100m run alone. Thailand is known to be kings in sprint and to be on that podium with them, representing the country, is a great
feeling,” said Noval, who now suits up for University of St. Benilde.

Noval said that he credits his improvement to his Benilde coaches Joseph Sy, Julius Nierras and Arnold Villarobe, who had given him his toughest training in the past three months in preparation for the Thailand Open.

“What makes this sweeter is I never intended to make it to the Top 3. The focus of our training, really, was to break the RP record. And we did more than that,” said Noval.
Noval broke the 100m junior record twice in this tournament. He posted 10.79 in the heats and reduced this to 10.74.

Now with the junior record out of the way, Noval looks at the bigger prize.

“Representing the country felt really good. I want to keep doing that. And to play against strong competitors pushed me to my limits. I will be working harder, the next stop will be the Sea Games. It’s still a long way to go but I will work hard for that,” said Noval.

Day 2 Two Gold Medals for RP

Two gold medals were delivered by the 27 strong Philippine Team courtesy of Olympian Rene Herrera and Julian Reem Fuentes on the second day of the Thailand National Track and Field Open at Thaamasat University, Rangsit Province.

Herrera did enough to win the 3k Steeples in a time of 9:17.53. Albeit the time was a little slow, being more than 20 seconds off what he ran to win his fifth sea games title in 2011 and 14 seconds outside his personal best. Neither of the Two SEA Games medalists featured in his race, there is alot of work to do for the 33 year old veteran if he is to win his sixth consecutive SEA Games title next year.

While Fuentes the Palaro Long Jump record holder broke his personal best of 7.26m he had established at the Palarong Pambansa earlier this year to collect his second international medal. Fuentes added to the Bronze he collected at the ASEAN Schools to record 7.29m to take out the Junior Category in Thailand. The 17 year old Fuentes who now studies at CSB stayed in #4 on the Alltime list, and moved a bit closer towards the 7.55m Junior Record of Joebert Delicano set in 1999.

.

Malacad edges closer to SEA Games standard

It was been a tiring last ten days for Josie Malacad who at the Uni Games had ran a total of 3.1 km worth of sprint races. Luckily the 400m had been reduced from three rounds to two and the 400m Hurdles a straight final and the 4x400m a straight final. Reducing her mileage for the National Games from 2.4km to 1.6km worth of sprinting. Undoubtedly the 20 year old is in the best form of her life right now.

After improving on her personal best again this year to 57.03 Malacad had shown she is a worthy main stay in the newly formed Womens 4×400 relay which certainly have a medal chance at SEA Games. She also edged closer towards an individual spot in the SEA Games again reducing her personal best to 1:01.90. The bronze standard now reduced to 59.64 last SEA Games. Newcomer Oanh of Vietnam who boasts an event PB of 57.25 won the Hurdles in a time of 1:00.20. Malacad delivered the silver medal in this event.

Another Silver was gained by veteran SEA Games silver medalist Narcisca Atienza who scored 5100 points in the Heptathlon, which included a 15.47 run in the hurdles.

Jenny Rosales won the seventh heat of the girls 200m in 25.87, before crashing in the semi-final and only managing 26.54 finishing fourth and failing to advance to the final.

.

Day 3, Fantastic First Day of the Decathlon as Run For Change Athlete Cid Closes in on National Record

The best performed athlete of the 27 strong RP Team at the Thai Open in Rangsit is Jesson Ramil Cid. The 21 year old had what can only be deemed as the greatest first day performance in the History of the Decathlon in the Philippines. Cid and his coach Sean Guevarra came to Thailand simply with the goal of getting the 6600 points required to get the Bronze standard for the SEA Games. The talent from Ilocos Norte who was recruited by former FEU Coach Rosito Andaya back in 2010 and had set the junior record.

Jesson Cid is one of the priority athletes of Run for Change (R4C), a non-profit sports association who supports and manages athletes under its team. R4C is the two-time overall champion of the POC-PSC Philippine National Games. Their thrust is to support and develop aspiring athletes into becoming members of the National Team. Other athletes under R4C include Christopher Ulboc, Isidro del Prado, Jr, Wenlie Maulas and Raphael Poliquit, Jr.

.

Chasing the National Record

Cid stunned everybody including himself when he broke every single one of his personal bests in all five events of the Decathlon on Day 1. Cid shattered his 100m PB running 10.88 to move to third on the Ranking Lists for 2012 (previous best 10.8 hand or 11.04et), he threw the Shotput 10.96m, he leapt 7.08m (prev best around 6.80), he high jumped 1.89m (3cm higher than his best from 2010), and to top it all off he clocked 48.05!!! seconds (which was faster than the 3 indiv RP Runners in the 400m). After Day one Cid is sitting on 3876 points.

Cid came to Thailand with the goal of bettering 6600 points for the SEA Games, but now the possibility of breaking the National Record of the Legendary Fidel ‘Toto’ Gallenero the 2001 SEA Games Champion. Fidel who set the National Record at the 2001 Philippines National Open with 6963. Scored the following in his events. Which gave him a first day score of around 3769 points.

100m, LJ, SP, HJ, 400m / 110H, DT, PV, JT, 1500m

10.6-6.89-11.50-1.90-50.3-15.4-33.61-4.20-53.20-4:57.3

Cid strongest event on the second day is the Hurdles where he has a personal best of 15.00et, a sub 15 run will see valuable points, he must also throw over 30m in discus, over 4m in pv, over 50m in javelin. And make up for this by running a sub 4m40 in order to stay in line for the National Record.

.

Malacad Improves to #8 on the All Time List

It has been a brilliant competition for Josie Malacad she has ran a personal best in every race she has ran in. Malacad again improved her 400m PB to 56.45s finishing fourth in a class final. Rathna of Sri Lanka won in 55.12, ahead of her team mate Sandamali 55.66, and Vietnam‘s Oanh 55.75 who earlier won the 400 Hurdles, PNG Champion Keizel Pedrina finished back in sixth place.

The graceful striding Malacad has now taken the season lead in the 400m with 56.45, which will greatly help the womens 4×400 campaign to qualify for the SEA Games.

Josie also moved upto #8 on the all time ranking lists tucked in between Perla Balatucan-Lobos (56.23) and Lucila Alam (56.61).

The Mens 400m was a bit of an off day for Alejan, Bagsit, and Nierras. The trio made the final. However timed 48.73, 48.88 and 49.32 to finish fourth, sixth and seventh.

.

Silver Medals for Veterans

Narcisca Atienza delivered a silver medal in the Hepathlon with 5100 points behind SEA Games Champion Wassana Winatho. Arniel Ferrera improved on his seasons best throwing 56.93m however this wasn’t enough as SEA Games Champion Tantipong Phetichya won with 61.24m. Eleazer Sunang was sixth in the shotput with a throw of 15.28m.

.

It was a rather dismal effort by the Womens 4×100 who finished fourth in 47.84s behind three local Thai teams, with the SEA Games standard being 45.12 in this event. We should seriously question after two outings if this is an event we are likely to medal in at SEA Games? consider are national record of 45.29 was done with four runners who had an average time of around 11.7et and that Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam all have several consistent sub 12 runners available.

..

Day 4: Cid cements himself into the SEA Games but misses out on National Record this time

Jesson Ramil Cid finished an agonizing two points off the National Record of 2001 SEA Games Champion Fidel Gallenero in the Decathlon (6963). Cid scored 6961 points

On the second day he got (110 Hurdles 15.19, Discus 31.76, Pole Vault 3.90, Javelin and 1500m awaiting data). The Hurdles and Pole Vault were below his personal bests. On the first day Cid had a clean sweep of PBs in all five events he participated in. Cids total was a massive improvement on his previous personal best which was 6287 at the National Games in Dumaguete. However Cids performance surpassed both the Bronze medal (6627) and Silver Medal standards (6830) of the last Two SEA Games bumping him from the training pool into the core national team itself.

Other athletes under R4C include Christopher Ulboc, Isidro del Prado, Jr, Wenlie Maulas and Raphael Poliquit, Jr.

.

Sprint Finals

The only record set during the meet for the RP Team was the Mens National Junior Record. Daniel Noval after lowering the 100m junior record to 10.79 in the heats, reduced it again to 10.74. Noval took a well earn’t Bronze medal in the Final behind to Thai Runners in 10.80 seconds.

Hanelyn Loquinto finished seventh in the womens 100m final in 12.38 seconds.

Jennyrose Rosales qualified for the women’s 100m final but did not start.

.

Women’s 4x400m Relay Team closes in on SEA Games Marks

PSC Commissioner Jolly Gomez (centre) poses with the Mens 4x400m Relay and Womens 4x400m Relay Teams.

Rosales who holds the Palaro Record in the 400m, joined with National PRISAA Champion Lorna Olarita, National Champion Keizel Pedrina, and UAAP & Uni Games Champion Josie Malacad in the Womens 4x400m relay. The team clocked 3:48.63 which is the best time by a Philippine Womens 4x400m Team since 1993.

In an earlier article ’3 Filipinas Make Final in Vietnam‘ I clearly stated the potential of this relay team at the SEA Games. This was a good initial run considering we have two stronger Fil-Heritage athletes to inject into the team who will be participating at the National Games and be used to help beef up the lineup towards qualification subject to fitness.

The qualification for the SEA Games is 3:45.03, or 3.6 seconds away. I would need to look at the video first to analyze the splits. So i have decided to leave this section of the article for now and will write a more in depth review later.

In comparison the more experienced Mens 4x400m relay team of Nierras, Bano, Alejan and Bagsit wound up with silver in 3:13.70 showing a lot of work needs to be done between now and SEA Games. However we should be more secure in the 400m as we have a lot of depth in this event and Cid should definitely be brought into the main lineup to boost the team.

.

Gold and Silver for Guarte and Maulas

SEA Games Champion Mervin Guarte secured the fourth gold medal of the Thai Open for the RP Team he clocked 1:52.90 which was well off the 1:50.65 he ran at the SEA Games. Closing in on him was newcomer Wenlie Maulas whose time of 1:53.08 was just .1s outside of his personal best. Paul Billones finished fifth in 1:53.99. Maulas and Billones have had very minimal training so it was impressive they were able to get close to there personal bests.

Finally Michelle Loterte who had an upset loss to Angelica Balatibat at Uni Games after tripping over after landing bounced back with a new personal best in the 100m Hurdles in a time of 15.11s which was good enough to earn the bronze medal in the Junior Womens 100m Hurdles.

Complete Results and Report Analysis

Attached is the Complete Results of the Thailand National Open at Rangsit November 2-5. This competition is usually held at the end of April but due to floods was postponed first to August and then to December..

Coach Roselyn Hamero, has kindly provided the full results of Thailand for Junior and Open age categories. We did not include youth results as no Filipino entries were registered in these events. As the Athletics Association of Thailand entered all the Thai names in the results in Thai Script we will unfortunately not be able to translate these names into English.

Report/Analysis

Possibly the Largest Team ever sent to the Thai Open

The Philippines sent a large convoy of 27 athletes to the Thailand Open Championships. To my knowledge as long as i have been competing (12 years) this is the largest delegation sent to an invitational international meet. The SEA Games of course in the past has probably had larger delegations, last SEA Games only had 22. But an invitational meet is a different category. Most of the athletes were funded by the PSC overseen by Commissioner Jolly Gomez who also was part of the delegation during the meet, however a few self funded.

Head Coach Joseph Sy and national coaches Roselyn Hamero, Nixon Mas, Sean Guevarra and Ernie Candelario also accompanied the team.

Overall the team did quite well with Four Golds, several silvers and bronzes. Also a National Junior Record was set during this meet by Daniel Noval.

In writing this report i will class performances as Excellent, Good, and needs improvement.

.

Excellent

Undoubtedly the best performer of this meet was Jesson Ramil Cid, he set personal bests in all five of his decathlon events on the first day. His time in the 400m of 48.05 was faster than the 3 individual 400m runners the Philippines had entered. Cid 6961 was only two points off the National Record of 2005 SEA Games Champion Fidel Gallenero. He also surpassed the silver medal standard for the SEA Games of 6830 winning one of four gold medals for the team. Its not out of the question that he could be within a chance of securing a gold at sea games, even though 7200+ won last SEA Games. 7100 Might be enough to secure the gold.

Daniel Noval although he did not win a gold medal, did something more special. He reset the National junior record twice in 10.79 and 10.74 in the heats and semis of the Junior 100m. Noval finished with a well deserved bronze in the final in 10.80.

The best female performer of the Philippine contingent was Josie Malacad who set three best performances in the 400 Hurdles she got a silver medal in 1:01.90, which is her third improvement on her time this year, although the sea games standard is tough at 59.87. Also best times were recorded in the heats of the 400m with 57.03 and again in the final finishing fourth in 56.45. This improvement in time helped the womens 4×400 secure a silver medal.

The Womens 4×400 team clocked 3:48.63 which was the fastest time by Filipinas since 1993. Malacad joined Pedrina, Olarita and Rosales with an average time of 57.5 each runner. The time was 3.6s off sea games qualification but with two other faster 400m females who could figure at the PNG and improvements from the existing members qualification and being able to challenge Thailand at the SEA Games for silver is fast becoming a reality.

The Other excellent performance came from Julian Reem Fuentes who won the Junior Long Jump easily with 7.31m. The 17 year old improved on his record breaking jump at the Palaro. This is Fuentes second international medal after he won a bronze at the ASEAN Schools.

.

*Coming soon will be the ‘Good’ and ‘Needs Improvement’ analysis

Changes to Stats

Michelle Loterte aka. Michelle Palmares, Josie Malacad, Daniel Noval, and Arniel Ferrera all established season leads.

Also noted Maika De Oro set a season lead in the Women’s Discus at the Uni Games. *38.96m in juniors is the discus the same weight for senior and junior?

.

Their was only one addition to the list of athletes who have surpassed the medal performance standard at the last SEA games. Cid with a silver medal decathlon performance and the second fastest time in the 400m which puts based on times Bagsit, Cid, Alejan and Nierras into the 4x400m lineup with the minimal time being that of Nierras now at 48.51 being the entry standard for the main spots in the relay team.

So far in 2012, 12 individuals and one relay team the Mens 4×4 have surpassed the SEA Games standards of 2011.

athletes-qualified-for-sea-games-2012-as-of-november

.

Conclusion

Overall it was a good step in the right direction for the sport with around a 95% perfect selection process of athletes for this meet. Maybe the tip of the Iceberg as we have more talents who will add depth to this lineup. A deluge of 27 athletes at a meet served as a wake up call that the Philippines is determined and committed to being back amongst the medal count at SEA Games. We should continue trying to maximize are participation at these type of meets in order to develop our athletes for the SEA Games and also to allow new athletes to have a chance to prove themselves.

Week 1 Report, July 14th

With a lot of National level athletes skipping this meet due to recovery phases from overseas meets and alot of college athletes having academic commitments performances were thin across the events.

Richard Salano of UE clocked a personal best 15.34.7 to take the mens 5k from Rafael Poliquit of FEU. FEU Dalyn Carmen won the 3k womens narrowly from her team mate Mary Ann Dela Cruz both having been active on the road running circuit. While UPHR man Elrick Paines had the fastest 100m time with 11.0, National training pool Josie Malacad after two very good performances in Vietnam last week had a run over the shorter 100m finishing second behind rookie team mate Raiveneth Penarubia.

2012 PSC-PATAFA Weekly Relay Results – Week 1

Week 2 Report, July 21st

(Jul 19) A rain drenched second week of the weekly relay serie at Pasig Ultra, caused several field events to be cancelled and performances to be sub-par. However some of the running events did push through. The best performance came from National Bronze 800m Medalist Jordan Paul Billones (who was using Wenlie Maulas BIB Number) who easily won the 2nd timed race running solo in 50.2 in the pooring rain. (Paul recorded his personal best for 400m of 49.7 during the Hypersports Time Trials last April).

Mens 800m Feature event PB for Ulboc.

Silver Medalist Mervin Guarte one of the big names at last weekends PATAFA weekly relay events (Photo Credits: Ojon Artiaga)

.( Aug 2) The 800m was going to be the feature event of this weekly relays however on July 28 the times were a bit slower than usual. SEA Games Silver Medalist and National Champion Mervin Guarte of SSC (San Sebastian College) won in 1.55.5, ahead of Steeple Chaser Christopher Ulboc FEU 1.55.9 (PB) (Far Eastern University) and National Bronze Medalist Jordan Paul Billones 1.56.3 (Unattached). Absent from the race was National Silver Medalist Wenlie Maulas of UE (University of the East).

Guarte just did enough to win his best time is 1.50.65 from sea games and this year 1.52.19 at the PNG (Philippine National Games) in May. Billones also was behind his best time which was 1.53.78 at the PNG. Guartes training partner Ulboc stepping down to the shorter distance improved his PB which was 1.56.71 back in 2009.

.

Malacad Disqualified

Josie Malacad (Photo Credits: Roselyn Hamero)

Another member of the national training pool, Josie Malacad of FEU who performed so brilliantly in Vietnam last month (new pb 400 hurdles 1.02.30 and 400m 57.04) also did enough to win the womens 400 Hurdles in a time of 1:06.0 unfortunatley she was disqualified for running out of her lane for side clearing (explained below in comments).

Meanwhile in the Mens Division, Decathlete Jesson Ramil Cid of FEU clocked a modest 54.9 to win his 400 Hurdles clearly. Cid was not far off his season best of 54.79 he set at the UAAP earlier this year, but still quite far off the 53.1 he established at the UAAP last year. (interestingly enough the 400 Hurdles is not part of the ten events which make up the Decathlon).

.

Cousins cleanup in sprints

FEU women had three collegiate 4×100 relays and took the first three spots. While in the mens FEU newest recruit Isidro Del Prado Jr. aka. Tilo (formally of College of Saint Benilde, and son of Isidro Del Prado 400m record holder) anchored his team to a 42.4 win over JRU 43.3.

In the Mens 200m, Tilo’s cousin Pearnel Lobos of JRU (formally of FEU, the son of 4×4 national record holder Perla Balatucan), had the fastest 200m time with 22.5. Lobos who was one of the favourites at the national games in the junior 100m last may, before pulling his hamstring in the finals. While in womens Heptathlete Mildrid Salut of FEU ran 26.8 in women’s.

Emerson Obiena

.

National Coach and Masters Athlete Emerson Obiena won the mens pole vault over a bunch of athletes 25 years his junior with a leap of 4.00m. His brother Edward was 5th in 3.60m.

National team member Riezel Buenaventura who is coached by Emerson, was another national athlete who had a comfortable win with a 3.40m leap some 50cm of her personal best. The National Record is held by Filam Deborah Samson who leapt 4.11m back in 2008 at the California regionals. Samson also jumped 4.12m before obtaining a Filipino passport. The impression though left in the juniors was by upcoming junior Natasha (Nash) Marie Nalus whose first pole vault leap in a competition of 2.80m put her at #5 on the junior all-time list. Her training partner Katrina Baron holds the Junior Record at 2.90m from last year.

.

Palabrica breaks through

FEU Rookie 18-year-old Evalyn Palabrica who won the Palaro Pambansa Javelin representing Western Visaya’s earlier this year (39.61m), got the better of team-mate Jenefer Penepona with a throw of 39.40m. Penepona the UAAP Champion whose best is 41.66m was well off target with a throw of 35.63m.

In Mens Discus National Games Silver medalist Joel Sta. Mina of FEU won with 37.81m (PNG 40.25m).

Salano looking the goods for UAAP

Another Good Performance saw 20-Year-Old Richard Salano (UE) improve once again on taking 4 seconds off his personal best time in the Mens 5k with 15:30.7. Salano who took silver last UAAP behind national training pools Christopher Ulboc (FEU) (15:38.36 to 15:42.63) is currently the front runner for the UAAP 5km title in November, where he will square up against Ulboc again. Salano is currently ranked fourth this year in the Mens 5k behind Olympian Rene Herrera, national team members Buenavista and Sermona. He is ahead timewise of Ulboc who recorded 15.37.79 at the National Games last May. Ulboc is expected to be a dominant force in events from 800 to 10km where has has been recording some good times.

Meanwhile in the womens race, UAAP 5k Bronze medalist Mary Ann Dela Cruz (FEU) was dealt another loss by 16-year old Catherine Bristol from St Francis of Assisi high school in the 3k run.

.

Sprint Events

In the Mens 100m, National Hurdles open and junior record holder Patrick Unso (DLSU) took out heat 1 in 11.0, way back in the 7th heat was National Junior Decathlon record holder Jesson Ramil Cid (FEU) who won in 11.0. Talented Junior Pearnel Lobos (JRU) won the 2nd heat in 11.1.

.

In the Womens High Jump Joean Bermudo (FEU) the UAAP Bronze medalist had the best jump improving her personal best from 1.55m to 1.60m.

Report

Jose Unso got the better over his much more prestigious younger brother in the Mens 400m Hurdles. In a hairline finish Jose (55.96) and Patrick (55.97) both timed 56.0 with the win going to Jose. The brothers later returned to win the Mens 4×100 in 42.1 for DLSU well clear of the FEU team 43.3.

In a return to competition Keizel Leano Pedrina running under the name ‘Bernice Chua’ won the womens 400m Hurdles easily in 1:04.8, albeit about a second off her personal best.

romnick nor pearnel lobos philippine naitonal games

Double National JR Champion Romnick Nor (Orange) shows good sportsmanship helping injured Pearnel Lobos (Blue) off the track at the National Games.

JRU Pearnel Lobos was the top man in the 200m with the days best time of 22.3 (pb 22.36 UAAP), 18-year old Lobos who was one of the favourites in the Boys 100m last PNG until pulling him hamstring in the final. Unknown Gabriel Santos? of Letran won heat 1 in 22.4. Palaro 2011 400m Champion Anfrenee Lopena (transferred from University of San Recoletos Cebu to College of Saint Benilde, originally from Bohol) made a return to the track after more than a years absence to win heat 8 in 22.7. UAAP 100m Bronze medalist Jasper (DLSU) Tanhueco won the fourth heat in 22.8.

Some very quick times in the girls 200m with St. Francis of Assisi 16-year old Marilyn Avila (96) winning heat 1 in 26.2, her team-mate another speed teenager Christine Del Rio (96) topped the 5th heat in 26.5. The quickest time in the boys 200m was 23.0, the name is not listed if anyone knows please post in the comments. The girls posted faster times than the winner of the womens Mildrid Salut (FEU) 26.6.

Nothing special in the mens 800m this week with the top three at the nationals Guarte, Maulas, Billones and the inform Ulboc deciding to sit this one out. The times in the event for some reason were a bit slow. The winner was JRU Roldan Verano the 21-year old has a personal best of 1.53.6 (2011 NCAA), however could only manage 1.57.5 for the win in the first heat, Rafael Poliquit (FEU) 1.58.9 probably a personal best time finished behind him. Michael ‘Topix’ Villamor (UPHR) who was fourth at the nationals timed 2.03.7, which was well behind his personal best of 1.55.04 (PNG 2011 Bacolod) and his seasons best 1.56.60 (2nd 2012 NCAA).

In the Mens Pole Vault it seemed everyone wanted to jump 3.80m. 37-year old Antonio Chee and 48-year old National Champion Emerson Obiena emerged joint winners. Then on countback 2010 UAAP Champion Zek Valera, National Junior Record Holder EJ Obiena (returning from broken bone injury), and upcoming Robert Miguel Nasis (UP) all registering 3.80m also.

Luckily for the men Riezel Buenaventura wasnt jumping around her best as it would have meant the indignity of being upstaged by a women. Buenaventura registered 3.60m. But the real excitement came from the second placer Natasha (Nash) Marie Nalus who broke the Philippine Junior Record with a leap of 2.95m read more here. Former record holder and training partner Katrina Baron had a slight improvement with a 2.40m leap.

Also on the improvement trail was FEU Evalyn Palabrica who is looking like the favourite heading towards the UAAP Javelin. The 18-year old who was only throwing 36m at the Palaro in June improved her best again from 39.61 to 41.55. This time increasing the margin of victory over defending UAAP Champion and team-mate Jennfer Penepona 38.55m (pb 41.66m last uaap). The improvement has catapulted Palabrica from 8th to 3rd on the all time junior list. Only Record Holder and former SEA Games Champion Rosie Villarito (44.54) and Palaro Record Holder Stephanie Cimatu (42.34) are ahead now.

Weekly Relay BIB Numbers

*Special Note to all participants in the Weekly Relays please ensure you are wearing the correct ‘BIB’ and to register at the PATAFA office as this causes confusion for the encoder of the results, the points system, national coaches and the Statiscians :).

Several athletes had complained that BIB Numbers were made of very flimsy paper material which was very easy to rip. Hence they used their team mates BIB Numbers as their original number was originally destroyed.

I recall how when I first competed way back in 2000 at the National Open the BIB’s where made of more durable Cotton. These concerns and suggestions have been passed onto the PATAFA. (please post comments)

.

Report

(Aug 25) Some very fast times reported by unknowns and super fast times upto #9? possibly relating to Bib Swapping or timing issues? PATAFA encoder and staff is investigating and checking with the time keepers. Seven Days after the said event

For now the results should be considered on hold as the winning time listed as two of the times listed are faster than what Rene Herrera ran during the olympic games.

An incredibly fast set of results, which is currently being amended by PATAFA. For the record I did not notice most of these names as none of them are ranked faster than 15m45 this year.

2011 Palaro 400m Champion Anfernee Lopena (running as Jason Benitez BIB) of CSB had the fastest time taking out the first heat in a new best time of 10.9. Lopena originally from Bohol but who transferred from Cebu smashed his previous best time of 11.50. National Hurdles Record Holder Patrick Unso (DLSU) also clocked the same time but a bit later on winning heat 11.

Hypersports girls 4x100 national champions

All Four Members of the Hypersports Womens 4x100m Junior Womens National Champion’s where in action in week 6. From Left to Right. Loterte, Rosales, Schrijvers and Angco.

In the first heat Jenny Rose Rosales (UE) got the better again of Palaro Champion Maureen Emily Schrivjers (DLSU) 12.5s to 12.6s, it was a repeat of the placings at the National Games in May. Rosales will attempt to defend her UAAP title she won earlier this year in November.

Michelle Loterte (UST) the National Junior Hurdle Champion was a distant third in 13.0. FEU’s UAAP Heptathlon Champion Mildred Salut won the third heat in 13.0, and her team mate National 400 Hurdles Champion Josie Malacad won heat 5 in 13.0. National Junior 400m Champion Neslee Angco won heat 2 in 13.2.

Christine Del Rio of Assisi was the fastest high school girl with a PB of 13.0.

This week 16-year old Catherine Bristol ‘conceded’ a loss to Carmen Dalyn in the Womens 3k. Dalyn of FEU who was the UAAP Champion in several distance events last year winning easily in 11:20.8.

.

The Amendments that need to be made to the Week 6 results are as follows.

  1. The Mens 5k obviously had some sort of time keeping issue, whether it was a lap short
  2. Anthony Lopena (CSB) used ‘Jason Benitez’ BIB in the Mens 100m.
  3. Felyn Dolloso (DLSU) used ‘Gerald Layumas’ BIB in the Womens Long Jump
  4. The Boys high school results are jumbled with the girls high school results in the 100m

If anyone has any other concerns with the results (please post in the comments here so these can be forwarded onto PATAFA

Report(/September 1) Weekly Relays Week 7.
.

Announcement for General Public: Please Note due to the Pasig Oval being used for the Milo Little Olympics on September the 8th. That there will be no Weekly Relays for that week. The Weekly Relays will resume on September 15.

.

.Corrections and Amendments

Due to several time keeping/encoding issues. Week 6 report of the weekly relay is still not yet finalized. The four errors I had isolated had been fixed. However their are additional errors reported to the general public I was not able to pick up. I have attached a copy of Week 6 weekly relays however it should be noted that the encoder and PATAFA is still fixing these results and they are not yet fully finalized. Therefore I cannot add them to the combined week 1-5 super result list. Week 7 results have been attached here.

The Mystery of the Men’s 5K was that due to a lap judging error it was only 4600m.

In regards to the flimsy paper BIB Numbers. Question has been reassigned to PATAFA.

As the report and results for Week 6 were delayed due to errors. Voting on Week 6 for the Athlete of the week is still ongoing and will be closed on Friday. You can still vote for Week 6 athlete of the week here.

After his win last week in the 800m. Roldan Verano (JRU) was back to win the 1500m in 4.03.8. Verano’s time was a little faster than the 4.03.97 he registered earlier in the year when he won Silver behind Mervin Guarte (SSC). Report :Salano and Poliquit show good Form for UAAP

Richard Salano (UE) again proved he is the man to beat at the UAAP registering for the fourth time in a row over 5km another personal best of 15:30.4. Salano who have smashed his personal best which was 15:42 at the beginning of the year is looking likely to take the Mens 5K title at the UAAP. As the countries fourth fastest man over 5k this year he is behind three great veterans Herrera, Buenavista and Sermona.

Not to be outdone was Rafael Poliquit (FEU) who took a considerable chunk off his last performance at Weekly Relays in July of 15:47.3 lowering that to 15:31.0. Poliquit who hails from Davao City improved his personal best last year of 15:35.4. It will be an interesting 5k with defending champion Ulboc last performance being 15:37.79 at the PNG where he beat Salano and Poliquit.

Third place went to Roldan Verano (JRU) in 15:45.5 who had been running some very good performances recently in middle distances.

Meanwhile Week 6 joint-top athlete Carmen Dalyn (FEU) gained another win in the Womens 3k.

.

Sprints

Daniel Noval provided a ‘perfect example’ of sprinting on Saturday Afternoon.

Surprisingly the fastest time of the day went to undercard Heptathlete Mildrid Salut of FEU who won the first heat with a time of 12.7s. The 23 year-old who hails from Montalban, Rizal ran her personal best of 12.68et at the UAAP in the heats failed to place in the finals. Salut also capped off a good day by winning the Womens Long Jump in 5.13m.

Both Week 7 ‘Athletes of the week’ featured in the second heat with Maureen Emily Schrivjers winning in 12.8s over Michelle Loterte 13.0s.

NCAA Champion Daniel Noval (CSB) was the fastest man on the track winning the second heat of 100m in 10.8s. Daniel who hails from Cebu came .02 seconds off the Junior Record (10.82) of his mentor National Record Holder Ralph Waldy Soguilon at the last NCAA. The last chance perhaps for that feat will be at the Thailand Nationals Nov 2-5. Meanwhile his team-mate and fellow Cebuano Week 6s Joint-top athlete Anfernee ‘Pene’ Lopena (CSB) won the first heat in 11.0 equalling the effort he had made the previous week.

JRU won the Mens 4×400 relay in 3:22.0

.

Field

Highschooler Eric Dela Cruz had a very impressive 37.06m in the Boys Discus. Riza Sombilla (UP) though slightly off her best throw won the womens shotput easy in 10.37m.

Joeann Bermudo (FEU) had a win on countback over Schrivjers (DLSU) with both registering 1.55m, with the absence of National Junior Record Holder (1.66m) Aprilen Laudencia of (FEU). It will be an exciting lineup with the three favourites going head to head at the UAAP in December.

2012 PSC-PATAFA WEEKLY RELAY RESULTS – WEEK 8

.

.

Week 9 Report Weekly Relays (Have a Vote!)

Again a thankyou to Coach Roselyn Hamero (PATAFA) for supplying these results. And I am surprised and impressed at the speed of the availability.

Daniel Noval provided a ‘perfect example’ of sprinting on Saturday Afternoon.

.

When the dust settled the people of Philippine Athletics have decided that Week 8s athlete of the week is none other than Daniel Noval. Noval is the NCAA Champion and Record Holder in the 100m 2011 and 2012, and before that the boy from Mandaue, Cebu was the Palaro Champion 2009 and 2010 and is the joint Palaro Record Holder in the 100 and 200m Dash. Noval best time of 10.84 is just .02 shy of the JR Record held by his mentor and National Record Holder Ralph Soguilon. Daniel Noval opened up his weekly relay serie with a time of 10.8 (hand) last weekend.

.

Report

Performances where much slower than last week with very wet and windy conditions which caused alot of athletes not too turn up. UAAP Champion Michelle Loterete (UST) won the 100 Hurdles (15.9) from last years UAAP Runnerup Mildrid Salut (FEU) 16.2. With Leah Casilihan of DLSU third in 16.4.

After months of injury Robert Francisco formally of Mapua now at CSB made a return with the fastest Hurdles time of 15.6. Likewise the womens 1500 Mary Ann Dela Cruz (5:06) (FEU) and Roldan Verano (4:08) where not impressive due to the weather.

PNG Champion Keizel Pedrina (UST) in what was pritty much a solo effort won the Womens 400m in 58.4 well clear from the PNG Junior and Palaro Champion Neslee Angco (UE). The three Filipina quarter milers in the last few weeks Olarita (58.3 at Cesafi) and Malacad (58.4 at Rizal).

However in the Mens 400m Isidro Del Prado (FEU) the Silver Medalist at the PNG in this event was almost caught on the line by DLSU Team Captain Jericho Ejercito with both runners registering 50.8s. 2010 National Junior Silver Medalist Pearnel Lobos (JRU) was third with 2011 Palaro Champion Anfernee Lopena (CSB) who led most of the way fading to fourth.

Week 9′s athlete of the week was Actor Jericho Ejercito. The hard working team captain of the DLSU came very close to almost holding off fast finishing National Silver Medalist Isidro Del Prado Jr. (the son of the legend and 400m Record Holder Isidro Del Prado). Ejercito is also the third son of a legend, his father is former actor and governor of Laguna E.R. Ejercito. In Week 9 Ico as he is better known was nominated overwhelmingly for his efforts with 84.6% of the votes.

,

Report: Unso Strikes Twice

For a long time in his younger brothers shadow. Jose Unso of DLSU set a personal best of 53.6 in the 400m Hurdles to break his long standing personal best of 54.0 (set way back in 2009). The oldest son of national record holder Renato Unso. He is also the training partner of Ico Ejercito. Unso won the first heat beating NCAA Champion Philip Silloco (UPHR) (56.2) easily, with rookie Glen Morales (UST) (56.2) third

2010 NCAA Bronze medalist Domingo Cabradilla the winner of heat 4 in (55.7) with Ramil Toledo (FEU) taking out heat 2 in (56.2).

Unso came back to win the 200m dash in 22 flat to win the first heat, Palaro 2011 400m Champion Anfernee Lopena of CSB was second in 22.3, with Ico Ejerctio third in 22.3. 2011 PRISAA 100m Champion Peter Pol Padal of JRU won the sixth heat in 22.3.

jose unso dlsu sprinter

Jose Unso 2 for 2 this weekend.

The shock surprise was UAAP Heptathlete Mildrid Salut (FEU) who ran well below her personal best to easily beat Palaro Champion Maureen Schrivjers (DLSU) 25.7 to 26.5 in the womens 200m. National Junior Silver medalist Neslee Angco (UE) was third in 26.6. On paper the race favorites for the 200m at the UAAP where Jenny Rosales (UE), Hanelyn Loquinto (FEU) and Schrivjers (DLSU) but now Mildrid looks like she is vying for a podium finish in that event.

.

Obiena bounces back

A sensational return to form with National Junior Record Holder EJ Obiena of ADMU returning from injury to take the mens pole vault on countback. Palaro Record Holder Adel Valdecenas was second. Both registering 4.20m. 2010 UAAP Champion Zek Valera was third. National Champion Riezel Buenaventura (PPVC) won the womens Pole Vault in 3.40m ahead of Katrina Baron (UP) who returning from injury leapt a seasons best of 2.80m.

Raniel Francisco won the mens discus with a good performance of 39.26m, ahead of 2011 Palaro Discus and Shotput Champion Efraem Gesulgon of CSB.

.

Fantastic Discus Throwing

Ira Mae Hernandez of UP had a massive improvement adding several meters onto her personal best, her throw of 36.88m was #9 of all time for Filipino Womens. (Not sure what the current UAAP Record is in Discus probably belongs to Roselyn Hamero).

Other Events

The Mens 800 is credited to Edward Sier Lao who was really Wenlie Maulas of UE in disguise with a time of 1:56.4s. Roldan Verano of JRU who won the 1500 the last few weekly relays settled for second in 1:57.0 (still over 4 seconds away from his best time). 18 year-old Jomar Angus of FEU was third in 1:57.7 and Week 9s winner Ico Ejercito was fourth in 1:58.4.

UAAP 1500m Champion Dalyn Carmen (FEU) won the 800m womens in a slow 2:25.5 from 2011 Palaro Silver Medalist in 1500m Vanessa De Valle (UP).

With the absence of National Champion Josie Malacad of FEU, her younger team mate Raiveneth Penarubia won the womens 400 Hurdles in 1:07.1.

FEU Women improved there relay time during the Weekly relays serie to 50.1.

15 year old Jaime Mejia (UP) had a good time for his age of 23.0 to win the boys 200m.

Mejia is the first high school athlete to win the coveted athlete of the week award for brilliant performance during the Weekly Relays serie.

.

Report – Salano Improves Again

Richard Salano again continued to improve his 5k winning time at the UAAP. Salano who has had 5 straight wins at the Weekly Relays has lowered his best time on every occasion. Again reducing it to 15:29.6, from 15:30.4 last time. At the beginning of the year Salano best time was 15:44.3 . The UE sprinter will be up against defending champion Ulboc (FEU) at the UAAP in December.

His team mate Gilbert Laido of UE put himself on the ranking list with a new best time of 15:45.3 to place second.

.

Century Dash the Rise of Mildrid

mildrid salut feu

Mighty Mildrid with Muscles

UAAP Heptathlon Champion Mildrid Salut of FEU again showed a dominating display after securing a personal best last week in the 200m winning the womens 100m in 12.4s. Mildrid who finished out of the medals in both sprints last year. The Muscular athlete from FEU who is better known as a hurdler is a certain chance at a podium finish this UAAP in both sprints. Noval is the second double weekly winner with Nash Nalus who won week 3 and 5. The 19 year old sprinter will be in action at the Uni Games in Bacolod over the next few days, and will try and break the Junior Record of Ralph Soguilon at the Thai Open in early November.

.

Report – Athletes of Jojo and Elma Shine

Showing the brilliance in the coaching ability of husband and wife team Jojo Posadas and Elma Muros, 18-year old Neslee Angco of Bohol running for UE was the fastest over the women’s 400m improving her best time to 59.3. Angco who was part of the Hypersports team at the PNG won the National Junior 400m and 4x100m titles. Her previous best of 59.4 earned her the Palaro Title. Perhaps a name that may carry on the 400m legacy in future years.

Another talented junior coached by Posadas & Muros, Pearnel Lobos was second fastest over 400m in 50.4. Lobos is the cousin of Del Prado and the son of Perla Balatucan and Arnel Lobos. Two former members of the national team in sprints and hurdles. Lobos last major title was a silver in the 400m at the 2010 National Open as a 16 year old then running for UE he is now at JRU. Good performances in this event with previous athlete of the week Captain/Actor Jericho Ejercito (DLSU), former 100m PRISAA Champion Peter Padal (JRU) and jumper Mark Harry Diones (JRU) also dipping under 51 seconds.

.

A Four way Dance in the Womens Triple Jump

Mildrid Salut in full flight.

In the Womens Triple Jump it was a close four way fight with emerging Heptathlete Mildrid Salut (FEU) improving her personal best to 11.58m and taking the win. Salut who only finished fifth at the last UAAP had recorded 11.35m at that time. Salut win came at the expense of two former UAAP Champions, 2011 UAAP Champion Felyn Dolloso was only able to manage 11.56m,(Dolloso is the National Junior Record Holder with a best of 12.55m). Salut’s team mates Avegail Dizon was third with 11.53m and Joeann Bermudo the reigning UAAP Champion was only fourth with 11.49m (well off her personal best of 12.00m). It will be a very exciting UAAP amongst these four.

Leah Casilihan of DLSU was the quickest over the hurdles who is being mentored by National Record Holder Sheena ‘Shyal’ Atilano. Asian All Stars – Almaty, Kazakhstan Event Review and Results

(Jul 5) A team of five athletes, where sent to the mountainous nation of Kazakhstan to compete against some of the best athletes Asia had to offer. Archand Bagsit, Henry Dagmil, Marestella Torres, Mervin Guarte and Junrey Bano represented the Philippines. They were accompanied by National Coach Lerma Buluitan-Gabito.

The best performance during the trip came from Olympic-bound Marestella Torres who equaled her season best of 6.62m (she won the event) which she had jumped in Thailand during the Asian Grand Prix this year. Torres whose best is the 6.71m sea games record last year in Palembang equaled the sea games record became the first Filipino track and field athlete in over a decade to make a standard when her leap exceeded the 6.65m B Qualification criteria. Unfortunately the Asian All Stars did not have a women’s long jump so the feat was achieved at the local Kosanov Competition.

The best in game performance was by Junrey Bano, Bano who went in as the favourite for the 2011 SEA Games but unfortunately finished 4th in the final. Bano finished 4th this time in the 400 Hurdles improving his seasons best to 51.84 (a tad bit faster than the 52.02 he ran at PNG in Dumaguete last month). He also claimed the win over the only other SEA Games athlete in the event Dao Xuan Cuong the reigning SEA Games Champion. Bano was just shy off his best time of 51.75 established in Palembang.

Bagsit registered his 5th sub 48 clocking in the 400m with a time of 47.71 to place 4th in the Men’s 400. He was just outside his personal best time of 47.44 that he ran in the Asian Grand Prix in Thailand.

Guarte finished 6th in the mens 1500m in a seasons best 3:55.85, although over five seconds faster than his performances at the NCAA and PNG. The time was still quite far off the current national & junior national record of 3:47.65 which he established at the last sea games to win the silver.

Guarte in the Mens 1500m

Henry Dagmil leapt 7.51m at the Asian All Stars and 7.58m at the Kosanov Meet

Loralie Sermona

July 19, 2012 2 comments

Below is my proposed Wiki, for another legend of Track and Field. In order to qualify for this status athlete must currently hold a record in a senior event.

VIDEO OF LORALIE THROWING IN HONG KONG

Loralie Amahit Sermona (born Nov 1, 1981), is a Filipino Hammer Thrower and currently holds the National Record. Sermona is from Binalbagan, Negros Occidental. Attending Binalbagan High School and Binalbagan Catholic College.

Loralie Sermona

As a member of the Negros Occidental team she was the National Junior Champion in the Womens Hammer two years in a row in 1999 and 2000. In her first year as a senior she registered a throw of 36.90m still trailing top thrower Roselyn Hamero. The following year however Sermona established herself as the top Hammer Thrower in the Philippines with a national record of 44.88m in the new event for women. She later would improve this mark to 45.28m with a 9th place finish at the Asian Track and Field Championships in Manila in 2003. At the 2005 SEA Games in Manila she improved  her NR to 48.63m. At the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand she improved her NR to 49.79m however finished just outside the medals in fourth  place.

In 2011 now competing under the surname Sermona (as had married national team mate and distance runner Julius Sermona) won her first medal at the SEA Games with a Bronze throw of 49.69m in Palembang, Indonesia.

She again improved her mark in 2012 twice first by winning the Philippine National Games in Dumaguete with 50.03m, and then a month later at the Hong Kong Invitationals  this time finishing second with 50.23m.
