Palaro – Luzon finally wins the Gold, Avila overcomes heartbreak and De Josef breaks 800 record.

palarong pambansa 2013

The Palarong Pambansa continued in Dumaguete with some very remarkable stories. A girl who never won an individual medal at the Palaro, a girl who spent three years in a row as the runner up in the 100m, and a first year high school student who broke the Palaro Record.

Avila overcomes heart break to become a champion

The True story of the games was NCR Marilyn Avila who after falling in the 100m Hurdles heats, came back to win the Girls 400m Hurdles in 1:04.3. At the expense of defending champion Jealyn Lancita of WV who finished third despite improving her best time from 1:05.6 to 1:05.4.

Rappler has wrote a very good report on Avila

The Bridesmaid finally wins the title

After three years in a row as the bridesmaid Eloisa Luzon of Northern Mindanao finally claimed the Palaro title in the 100m Dash. Luzon who had finished second behind Michelle Loterte, Jenny Rosales and then Maureen Emily Schrijvers qualified by far the fastest in the semi finals with a personal best of 12.2. In the final she secured a heroic victory into a big head wind in 12.6 seconds, ahead of her team mate Glaiza Salcedo. Salcedo who has recently came back to Track and Field after a short stint at Basketball was second in 12.8 seconds. Luzon will attempt to recapture the 200m title she won in 2010 as a first year high school student and secure the sprint double. Luzon performance ensured her selection into the ASEAN Youth Team for the Vietnam meet June 4-7.

.

14 Year old De Josef Impressive

14 Year old Angelica De Josef was impressive with a win in the girls 800m with a time of 2:17.2 breaking the Palaro Record 2:18.4. De Josef who is in her first year of High school at the Palaro represented the Western Visayas team.

.

Lirazan stops the Nor Express

Local favorite Christopher Lirazan had an upset win in the Boys 100m the times in the final were marred by a strong head wind with Lirazan emerging victorious in 11.1s. This was at the expense of 2011 Champion and PNG Junior Champion Romnick Nor who finished second in 11.3s, NCAA Boys Record Holder Jomar Utdohan was third for NCR in 11.3s also. Utdohan and Nor who have ran 10.7 and 10.6 were not able to cope with the strong wind aswell as Lirazan who has a best time of 10.9.

Lirazan also made it a sprint double winning the 400m in 49.7 beating 16 year old  Jaime Mejia 50.1 of NCR. Mejia won the 110 Hurdles in 14.9 and 400 Hurdles in 55.3.

Luzon and Nor qualify fastest to finals on Day One of Palaro

palarong pambansa 2013

Two promising young sprinters from Mindanao had the fastest qualifying times going into the final of the Palarong Pambansa at Dumaguete today.

Cotobato’s Romnick Nor, the 2011 Palarong Pambansa Champion, had the fastest time (allegedly 10.6 ht in semi finals). Nor, who previously represented ARMM, is looking at making a solid claim on the Palaro Record in the final where he will be up against 16 year old Jomar Udtohan of NCR, the NCAA Record Holder (10.7ht / 10.99et PB).

Meanwhile, after finishing silver in this event three years in a row, NMRAA’s Eloisa Luzon  was by far the fastest qualifier to the finals in 12.2 seconds. Luzon, who finished behind Michelle Loterte, Jenny Rosales and then Mau Schrijvers, now looks at finally capturing the title of being the country’s fastest girl in high school.

16 year old Mary Anthony Diesto of Western Visayas won the Girls Triple Jump in a big personal best of 11.61m.

The Palarong Pambansa was cancelled from 1984 to 1987 due to the events leading upto during and preceding the EDSA Revolution. The historic meet was revised in 1988 by then DEPED Head Aparacio Mequi. The 1988 edition was held at Misamis Oriental in Northern Mindanao.

While the results of 1988 where far from impressive compared to the pre 1983 editions, some new talents did emerge. On Day 1 (article above) a 15 year old from NCR named Robert Raquita won the 1500m erasing the 1982 Palaro Record.

The dusky daughter of a tricycle driver from beated two Western Visayas bets Marife Suanque and Magdalena Geciano.

1978 Palarong Pambansa

November 16, 2012 3 comments

This is the next set of results I have available.  The 1978 Palarong Pamabansa was held in Cagayan De Oro.

Back in these times the Palarong Pambansa actually served as a sort of National Games with just two age grades senior and junior (supposed to be under 20). There was no high school and elementary grade. A lot of the time athletes competing in the junior division where actually ‘over-aged’ as no birth certificate checking system was in place.

.

Mens

Mens 1500m was won by 21 year old Nestor Trampe in 4:09.0, Trampe four years later went on to set the Phil Record in the 1500m of 3.49.96 a record which stood for eleven years. Wilson Elefante was second (4:09.8) later had a career best of 3:51.43.

The 5k was won by Arthur Alimbuyao in 15:07.4 (carrer best 14:49.92), second was Rosario Sarmiento 15:15.0. Alimbuyao also won the 10k in a slow time of 34:29.1 however it was good enough to establish a new meet record  (career best was 31:07.4).

Teodoro Dela Santa (NMRAA) won the 100m in a sluggish 10.9s.   Ruben Moreno who finished third in 11.0s, actually had a personal best of 10.6s from 1974.

In 400 Hurdles Angelito Aguilar (54.6) beat future legend Renato Unso (55.2).  Unso won the 110 Hurdles in 15.5 (later 14.76et), Arnel Lobos is 4th in 15.9. Unso also won the Triple Jump in 14.22m.

Bicol’s Santos Magno Jr. won the 400m (50.3) held a PB of 48.73 from 1974 but getting on a bit by this stage.  Aguilar of WVIRAA was second in the same time of 50.3. Ernseto Lace (typo actually Honesto) was last in 51.8.  Larce would later become a famous member of the Bicol Express 4x400m relay team which set the still standing national record in the 4×400 back in 1985 and improved his 400 PB to 48.01 four years later.  Oddly enough Bicol won the 4×400 in 3:27.4 with Larce and Magno in this original incarnation.  Magno would later enjoy a successful career as a coach of several provincial athletes who later made it to the national team.

RTU current coach Elmer Reyes won the High Jump in 1.89m which was a meet record at this meet. Prior to this in 1974 Reyes had leapt 2.02m which was his career best in Singapore.

26 Year old Susano Ereng threw the shotput  12.64m, three years later he threw 15.20m which stood as the Philippine Record for 12 years. Manuel De Oro finished second in the Javelin. Future Hammer record holder Agustin ‘Danilo’ Jarina threw 40.24m to win the discus from Ereng.

.

Womens

Lucila Salao-Tolentino won the 100 Hurdles in 15.2 (best was 14.3 back in 1972 as a junior).  Just holding off Nanette Lusterio (15.3).  Lusterio won the Long Jump in 5.09m.

The 100m was very much a race of veterans this year. The then 29 year old Lorena Morcilla who represented the old guard of sprinters who preceded De Vega Mercado won the 100m (12.4). Morcilla was a finalist in the 200m at Asian Games and was active into her 30s setting her best 100m time of 12.11et in 1980. Another veteran Carmen Torres who at this stage was already 30 but ran until her mid 30s was second in (12.6), Lilibeth Galvez who had a PB of 11.9 from 1972 was third in 12.7. 24 year old Gloria Acedo was fourth in 12.8 (best time was 12.0 the following year).  Tolentino finished fifth in 13.0. Auxellador Sacro finished last (relative of the Unso’s?)

In a closely fought 200m Galvez won in 26.0 from Torres 26.1 (career best was 24.8), and Morcilla 26.2 (24.5 the next year).  Torres won the 400m in 58.9 from Galvez 59.8 (Torres career bests of 58.3/58.51 were done at the sea games the year before).

Consuela Lacusong won the Shotput in 12.06m.  In 1975 Lacusong had broken the 5 year old record of Josephine Dela Vina with a 13.92m shot which still stands as the national record. She beat Terresita Toorabala at this meet 10.79m (who had a best of 11.97m in 1975). Laucsong also won the discus in 39.39m (best 41.75m 1975).

The Javelin was won by Erlindia Lavandia 42.95m who won four sea games title in this event 1977,1979,1981 and 1985.

.

Boys

Future national junior record holder Julio Bayaban had major improvements over the next 2 years. The 17 year old won the 200m in 23.1. Danilo Yarte (later 21.8) on this occassion finished last in the final in 24.8. Bayaban took the double with 11.1 in the 100m.

In the Hurdles future ex-national coach Alex Ligtas and former gun starter Danilo Arpon where both in the boys hurdle finals. Ligtas also finished third in the high jump.

In the 1500m and 3ks future national coach Mario Castro finished last in both these events.

.

Girls

18 year old Agrifina Dela Cruz won the 100 Hurdles in 16.5.  She later went on to collect a hat rick of sea games titles in 1983, 1985 and 1987. Salve Cambonga clocked a time faster than the winner of the seniors with 12.2, just edging Suzette  Gegaraya 12.3. Cambonga also won the 200m.

According to this article Dated November 7. by Marian C. Baring of Sunstar

CEBU City has been producing the bulk of the athletes representing Region 7 (Central Visayas region) in the Palarong Pambansa. And now, Region 7 will be hosting the national meet in 2013.

That is why, in the Cebu City Olympics, set to open tomorrow, Thursday, at the Cebu City Sports Center, the pressure to come up with the best selection mounts.

Palaro 2013 in Bacolod Likely (from Visayan Daily Star)

(Aug 16) Bacolod is putting forward its case to hold the 2013 Palaro, citing that it has successfully co-hosted the 2005 SEA Games and was the main host of the 2011 1st PNG Games. The DEPED is 90% sure at this stage Bacolod will win the bid against other bidders Cebu and Dumaguete. Cebu who have got a brand new relaid track oval would also be a good choice after hosting last years National PRISAA. Dumaguete held the 2012 PNG Games and have one of the only 9 lane right around 400m tracks in the country.

Inspection Team Arriving (From Visayan Daily Star)

Members from the Department of Education Palarong Pambansa Evaluation Team are set to arrive in the province today to conduct an evaluation of Negros Occidental’s bid to host the 2013 Games.

Headed by Ma. Arianne Provido from the office of DepEd Assistant Secretary General Tonisto Umali, the team is tasked to oversee the conduct of the bidding and evaluate the province’s capability to host next year’s national Palaro.

Earlier, Gov. Aflredo Marañon expressed optimism that Negros Occidental will win in its bid to host the national school-based sports competition among elementary and high student-athletes.

Supporting the bid is Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia who stressed that the city and the province has played host to the Palarong Pambansa and the Panaad Stadium was the venue for a couple of international football competitions.

.

DepEd Regional Director Mildred Garay, likewise, is optimistic of Negros’ chances of winning the hosting bid, saying that it is 90 percent sure that the committee will choose Negros Occidental.

Batang Pinoy National Finals Dec 5-8 Iloilo City

12 year old Joycie Beranio of Negros Occidental set a blistering fast 12.9 hand timed to easily win the Girls U/13 100m title from Briceline Soriano of Pangasinan by five meters. Beranio performance equalled the all-time record for a 12 year old Filipina as it tied with the 13.17 time posted by Fil-Heritage Kyla Richardson.

Bacolod City’s Mary Diesto defended her Batang Pinoy title in 14-15 girls winning in 12.7, with Leah Ann Joan Creer of Leyte second in 13.0 (ran 12.7 in heats). Creer won the 400m title in 1m00 and the 200m in 26.3 running the same time in the heats.

Barefoot Hurdler Rocena Chua was the surprise winner in the girls 15-16 Hurdles

Barefoot runner Joneza Mie Sustiedo the Palaro Champion won the 1500m in 5:01.11 in 14-15 girls. However another Palaro Champion didn’t have the same luck Jasmine Felix of Baguio was beaten by Rocena Chua 15.7 to 16.3 in her pet event. Chua later went on to claim the 400 Hurdles title.

Lanz Jeremy Halongong of Iloilo Province won the Shotput in 12.51m for 14-15 boys good enough for the rankings, CJ Tabongbuna of Iloilo ran a very fast time of a 12 year old with 11.50 in the heats, it was just outside the Age Grade Record Held by Nasser Tacongcong at 11.40 during the 1998 Palaro. He however lost to Felix Libo-on who won the final in 11.90.

Mindanao Leg Results

supplied by Coach Roselyn Hamero

It seemed all the events were field events and track events are missing.  None of the performances were good enough to Rank on the 2012 seasonal lists. Attached are most of the results not complete.

Batang Pinoy Mindanao 2012 Results

Northern Leg Report

(Oct 10-12) No performances on the first day where worthy of making the senior lists. However this did not mean their was not some good performances from some very young athletes. 11 year-old Briceline Soriano the younger sister of Former Palaro standout and 2010 National 100m Champion Rhemilyn Soriano won the Girls Long Jump, 100 and 200. The best performance was a 13.3 by the young Soriano in the 100m which was faster than the winner of the older age category.

15 year old Patrick Vilchez of Baguio won the Boys 100m in 11.2 and 200m in 23.4

Palaro Hurdles Champion 16 year-old Jasmine Felix of Baguio City won the Hurdles comfortably in 16.4. Felix also won the Girls Heptathlon at the National Games.

NCR Leg Report

Mejia closest to the screen

Albeit the athletes here are 17 and under at Marikina Sports Park Sept 18-19. None of the results were really notable in terms of the Ranking List. The best result on Day 1 was 15-year old Jaime Mejia (UP) who won the 110 Hurdles in 15.6 over 3 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. (15.1 is the requirement to be entered on the national ranking list). Please watch this site for updates with future ranking lists.

*updated On Day 2 However 14 year old Celestina De Castro of Taguig easily topped the girls 200m heats in 26.1. A time which is good enough for the senior ranking lists which are being published today. However her time in the final was much slower at 27.9. She did also top the girls 100m in (13.2). This is a huge drop in performance between heats and finals. For now im happy to accept the time, but as the case is with most recorded hand times in sprint events i would be happy to see a similar performance next week at the weekly relays (held at Pasig) from Miss De Castro to help validate the accuracy and consistency of the hand timing if a similar hand times cannot be achieved the result maybe nullified from the rankings.

1998 Centennial Palarong Pambansa, Bacolod

The 1998 Palarong Pambansa which celebrates 100 years of Philippines Independence was held in Bacolod. This event saw the emergence of many future national stars and future national coaches (then as athletes). This is a partial listing of results that i had saved way back in 1998 when i first got the internet, this was when I was starting out as an athlete in my early high school days and became a follower of Filipino Track stats. Surprisingly these results are no longer available on the internet and have survived several hard drive crashes and reformats unlike other documents I once had.

Please note back then the Palarong Pambansa had three divisions, Elementary, High School and College or Primary, Secondary and Tertiary.

.

Day 2

SEA Games Double 2001-2003 400m Gold Medalist Ernie Candelario

  • The meet started off well with Herminia Peranda breaking the 10K Womens Record beating Enate Sayrol. In the Pole Vault Anna Natad then 19 leapt 2.60m, which was a Filipino Junior Record at the time. Natad later went onto to jump 2.90m which was the senior record until it was broken by Marestella Torres.
  • In the Mens Javelin Edmund Ramos (a resident of the famous gate 7) is fourth, he later changed his event to 400 Hurdles.
  • The Long Jump Tertiary is interesting with Former National Team mainstay Raphie Pilaspilas winning in 7.19m, from his team mate Ernie Candelario 7.04m (who would later become a sea games champion in the 400m twice). Roland Canta who would become a member of the training pool was fourth in that event.
  • Mayven De Oro, the relative of Maika De Oro won the Elem Shotput.
  • Future SEA Games Bronze Medalist Jerro Perrater broke the Palaro Record in the Mens Hammer Throw.

.

Day 4

The 1998 Palarong Pambansa saw the emergence and rise of Marestella Torres

  • Penaranda added the 5k womens record to the 10k record she had previously set.
  • A 17 year old Marestella Torres won the High School Long Jump in 5.54m this was the palaro record until it was broken in 2002 by Maricel Sibog. Former training pool sprinter Leslie Mercado was second.  Sibog who was then in her first year of high school leapt 4.92m for 5th place.
  • National Throws Coach Nixon Mas won the Mens Shotput in a Palaro Record of 13.72m well ahead of his opponents, his Davao team mate Airforce man Jordan Oberez  was 5th in 1m56 in a very closely fought mens 800m. Mas also won the discus in 39.10m, with Gerro Perrater also competing.
  • It was a famous trifecta with all three records in elementary-secondary-tertiary boys 100m records broken at this meet.
  • In the Boys 100m it was probably the fastest elementary field assembled with Nasser Tacongcong of ARMM running 11.4 seconds a mark which still stands unchallenged until this day. Though alot of them are probably overaged the first four in that said event broke 12 seconds.
  • Ronald Calaunan clocked 10.7s (10.69 hand), according to these results. However the Palaro record is listed as 10.9? does this mean that the 10.7 was the recording on the first stop watch and the other times made it round off to 10.9. 10.9 has been ran by Calaunan (98), De Ocampo (06) and Noval (11) which makes it a joint record. However if Calaunan 10.7 is the official mark that means he is the sole owner.  Ronnie Marfill who later became a member of the 4x400m medal relay team at SEA Games was 7th in that said event in 11.3.
  • Marfill won the boys 400m in 51.1 with Hypersports co-founder Vicente Sy third. Marfills future relay mate Ernie Candelario won the mens 400m in (49.1)
  • Benson Penarubia clocked 10.6s which is the Palaro Record, however careful research shows that Mario Tabuano ran 10.5 or 10.6 at earlier editions of this meet in what is the equivalent of the Tertiary division. Therefore he should atleast be the joint holder in this event.  Top sprinter Orlando Erece who once dated Nancy Navalta was second in 10.7 and UAAP Champion Nathaniel Moral was third in 11.0, Airforce man Elmer Billones who had a pb of 10.6ht was fourth in 11.0, with University of Mindanao Coach Harrish Natag fifth in 11.0.
  • In the Secondary Girls 800m, future sea games representatives Rosel Espinas (later UE) Nhee Ann Bharcena (later DLSU) finished 4th and 5th. But went onto run better performances than the girls that beat them.
  • Jonah Genilza who later joined DLSU and was a member of the training pool won the Secondary Girls 100m in 12.1s, ahead of Irene Mujar of BRAA who was the holder of the Elementary Record in 100m  the previous year and finish 5th. Genilza time was faster than the winner of the Tertiary Girls Marietta Rapadas 12.3s.

.

Day 5

  • Genilza also set a Palaro record of 58.1 in the 400m. This was the record until 2011 when Jennyrose Rosales broke it with 57.4.
  • Rene Herrera and Julius Sermona future olympian/sea games gold medalist 4-5 times in Steeples and sea games medalist finished first and third in the Mens 5k.
  • Canta won the Mens Triple Jump from Raphie Pilaspilas who placed third.
  • In elementary girls 100m Hurdles future FEU UAAP Record Holder Zara Dela Virgo won the gold.  While in the secondary division Amelia Fransisco who represented the Philippines at the Asian Juniors the next year won from Julie Rose Forbes. Forbes who later represented FEU would go onto set the JR Record in the 100m Hurdles at 14.61 in 2002.  Also impressive in the seniors was winner Sheena Atilano who later went onto break the national record of Elma Muros.  Pole Vaulter Natad picked up the bronze.  Mary Grace Melgar who finished 5th in this event later went on to win the silver in the 400m and 400m Hurdles at SEA Games.
  • Mercidita ‘Bunso’ Manipol (now Fetalvero) who later went on to set the 5K National Record was second in the 1500m.

.
Day 6

Olympian Henry Dagmil

  • Manipol also finished second in the 3k run again behind Marites Acomyo.
  • Maris Cottoner who later would set the secondary record won the elementary high jump.
  • Again there was a trifecta of records in the 200m in all 3 divisions. Tacongcong running 23.7s in elementary which still stands, Calauan ran 22.2s beating Ronnie Marfill, this record was tied by Daniel Noval in 2011. Penarubia set a 21.7 record in the mens division, Erece 22.0, and Ernie Candelario 22.1.
  • Charmei Cabale set a record in the elementary girls 200m of 26.94, which was later broken by Maureen Emily Schrivjers.  Genilza ran a quick 25.3.
  • Jerry Baldon of Davao was second in the boys triple jump.
  • Boys Secondary Long Jump was won by future national record holder, olympian and sea games champion x2 Henry Dagmil who leapt 6.86m, ahead of Baldon.
  • Forbes won the 400m High School Hurdles, Forbes later went on to finish 5th at the Asian Juniors in 2002 and set the still standing Philippine Junior Record.
  • Former SEA Games athlete Domingo Manata was second in the 400m Hurdles mens.
  • Future 3ks stand out Rene Herrera won the Mens 3ks.
  • Future High Jump Record Holder and now national coach Sean Guevarra won the silver in the pole vault.

Day One: Fuentes takes home more than just the long jump gold

Fuentes Soars to a new Palarong Pambansa Record

The highlight of Day 1 came from Julian Reem Fuentes of Region 2. Fuentes who came in second to Western Visayas (WV) Gerald Layumas last year in an epic 6.86 to 6.85 lock out (Layumas went on to win the UAAP title this year for DLSU). Fuentes this year not only satisfied his hunger for the gold but dished out a new Palaro record with 7.26m. Erasing the ten year old secondary boys 7.15m record of Paolo Martinez set at the 2002 Palaro in Bicol. So dominant was Fuentes in the event the silver was a very distant 6.45m.

Fuentes jump was the 2nd best jump of 2012 at the time behind Dagmil’s opening jump of 7.43m at the Laguna time trials. Fuentes leap is the 4th best ever performance by a junior behind Joebert Delicano (7.55), Teodoro Nonato (7.33), and Marayag (7.31). Fuentes will have this year and next to go after the national junior mark which has stood for thirteen years.

Cabanyog takes the shotput record but not a personal best

Richie Joy Cabanyog of WV went into the Palaro with a best throw of 14.15m from regional palaro. Last years silver medalist this time hurled the shot-put 13.90m although not his best throw it was still enough to erase the record of his team mate Efraem Gesulgon who won last year in 13.68m.

Cabanyog Palaro Record was not even his personal best throw.

Meanwhile in the Javelin Evalyn Palabrica exchanged her silver medal last year for the gold in the girls javelin with a 39.61m throw for the WV ahead of Rinalyn Apos 36.90m (Region 13).

.

Day Two: New Century Dash Hopefuls

LINGAYEN, PANGASINAN- With defending champion and outright pre-race favourite Romnick Nor( CMRAA) out due to a hamstring injury the 100m will be a head-to-head match. Joining them are Central Luzon’s (CLRAA) Jomar Ubtoman who clocked 11.0 just edging NCR Rodquem Maullom also 11.0 and team mate Terenz Tengol (CLRAA) 11.1 in their time trials respectively. New heroes in century dash and half mile shine in day 3 Palaro

Mau (tall sprinter in middle yellow) wins century dash for girls.

LINGAYEN, PANGASINAN- Maureen Emily Schrivjers of NCR demons to rest, after trying three years to win the Palaro. Mau’s last success in this event came four years ago when she won the elementary title. Mau had gone in as the favourite for the last 2 Palaro’s but the pressure had caused her to finish outside the medals back then. This year she finally went victorious as she capture the gold in the 100m secondary distaff race at the afternoon session in day three of Palarong Pambansa 2012 here at Narcisio Ramos Sports and Civic Center. The lass from the capital region register a 12.5 win jousting NMRAA’s Eloiza Luzon who clocked only a fraction of a second at 12.6 settling for silver while Schrivjers’ confidant, Perlita Ynot Jra settled for the bronze podium with a clock of 12.7.

Although Maureen’s time was not able to erase the Palaro Record in the century dash for secondary girls still held by Nancy Navalta since 1994, it was always more about the win rather than the time which finally delivered in her final year of high school.

.

.

Meanwhile in the elementary girls, Joycie Beramio of WVRAA captured the gold with a time of 13.1 seconds. Her teammate Berna Luz Talaron went next to her taking a 13.1 second finish. Joining for the bronze slot is Josephine Kately Pano (CAVRAA) with a time of 13.5 Seconds. The 12.8 Palaro Record of Irene Mojar (BRAA) in 1997 remained untarnished by this year’s champion.

A record jointly held by three athletes in the Boys Secondary 100m Dash in 10.9 became safe for anoIther year with pre-race favourite Romnick Nor injured but back for his final year next year. Three holders in this event are CAVRAA Ronald Calaunan 1998, Emmanuel De Ocampo 2006, and Daniel Noval of CVRAA 2010.

In the 100m sprint in boys secondary level, Jonas Etuille of CVRAA captured the first laurel with a clock of 11.1. Jomar Ubtohan of CLRAA settled for second place clocking 11.1 (0.9) and colleague Terenz Carlo Tongol from CLRAA as well secured a 11.2 second clock finish respectively. NCRAA got consecutive medals in the elementary boys side as Felix Libo-on garnered a 12.1 gold finish and teammate Emmanuel Gutierrez securing the second spot with a clock of 12.2 seconds. In third place is CAVRAA’s Mark Urbina with a 12.5-second sprint.

Half-mile run (800m) closed the running events for day 3 is the 2:18.8 run of WVRAA’s Angelica de Josef which shattered the Elementary 800m Palaro Record set by Joneza Mie Sustituedo (WVRAA) last year who registered a time of 2:21.48. NMRAA’s Jie Anne Calis went to second place with a time of 2:22.1 and MIMAROPA’s Cheska Guintos clocked 2:27.2 respectively. In the secondary girls, Lovielyn Pamatian of WVRAA captured gold with a time 2:18.7. NCRAA’s Trishia Martinez tipped the finish line with a clock of 2:20.8. Third place was got by DAVRAA’s Mae Barit who registered 2:21.6 time.

Salvador Garin’s 800m Palaro Record remained untouched this year as NMRAA’s Gerwen Mamba clocked 2:00.2 for first place which is still short to the 1:55.9 time of the STCAA standout . Reymark Dela Cruz of WVRAA goes for a silver run with a time of 2:00.5 and STCAA’s Michael Abanador registered 2:00.6 for the bronze finish.

In the field events, BRAA’s John Roel Sariols marked a 10.06m throw in Elementary boys shot put. Next to him were Remier Sugui of Region I (9.76) and Jummy Cabalbag of CAVRAA (9.50). Milo Little Olympics Background

(Aug 27) In the hearts of little champions, big dreams are waiting to come to life. Back then, these dreams partially comes to life in small town tournaments, local inter-school leagues and even informal street competition amongst friends. In the true spirit of building champions in life, MILO® saw the growing need for these little champions’ big dreams to come front and center.

In 1988, MILO® launched the MILO® Little Olympics in Manila. The league held competitions in 11 sports namely – athletics, badminton, chess, football, gymnastics, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball. And though the league was initially based in Manila, many little champions savored the taste of what it is like to have their dream of playing in a big stage come true. That is why in 1996, the MILO® Little Olympics was also held in Cebu. And expanded to Cagayan de Oro in 1997 and in Pangasinan in 1998. In the short span of time, MILO® has successfully provided a sporting event that little champions look forward to other than Palarong Pambansa and as well as other major sporting events in the south.

After years of successfully mounting regional games, the MILO® Little Olympics finally went nationwide with the first ever National Finals held in Cebu City on October 23, 2009. With the Queen City of the South serving as host, little champions from all over the nation came and competed for glory. Thousands of little champions got to play, thousands of big dreams came true. The MILO® Little Olympics is now the premiere nationwide junior interschool league for elementary and highschool student-athletes. Little champions nationwide can now show their excellence in sports, their drive, determination, discipline and other champion’s values to their peers throughout the nation. This kind of exposure teaches them to be champions not just in sports but in life as well.

In its 20 years as an inter-regional league and three years as a premiere annual national sports meet, the MILO® Little Olympics has produced and discovered little champions that have donned the country’s colors. Little champions with big achievements in international leagues like the South East Asian Games, World Youth Cup and the Asian Junior Track meet.

Great things truly start from small beginnings. It began with the need for little champions to have a place where their big dreams will come true. Now, the MILO® Little Olympics, with the help of the little champions, parents, coaches and organizers, has now become one of the most recognizable and sought-after league. A sporting event where every game and every match helps build champions in sports and in life.
