Have you notice something with the Philippines performances at SEA Games from 1979 to 1989. In 1979 the Philippines was not harvesting medals. It was in 1981 to 1983 that the Filipinos were harvesting medals in the SEA Games. When you remember the GINTONG ALAY program started late 1979 going to continue up to 1985 (but dying because of the Marcos leadership was being de-thrown in 1985). So in conclusion to the SEA Games historical information, since the Philippines started the GINTONG ALAY sports program our Filipino athletes started to improve their performances in their specific sports event and many Filipino athletes harvested medals at the SEA GAMES of 1981 to 1983.
Just like the African runners. Why are they world class runners? The answer is because the government of Kenya and Ethiopia invest to hire world class coaches to train and develop their long distance runners to run in world class times.
Now, why can’t we do this to our Filipino athletes?
That is why we did not bring home any medals at the last Olympics 2012 in London. We do not have any powerful programs (like the Gintong Alay) that will train and develop our athletes to reach the undeveloped world class calibers in them.
    This is really frustrating!
    BUUUUYYYAAAAAHHH!

Thanks for your response Mr. Mata. I do appreciate your deep knowledge and thoughts shared. I agree with you that the Philippines in 1977 and 1979 was in its infancy in sea games, in fact the first sea games it seems they send whoever will fit on the plane in there selection process.

The Gintong Alay did greatly help. You will notice a 15 year old Lydia participated in the 1979 SEA Games finishing 6th in the final in 12.46.

Agreed Mr. Anthony Benson was a mastermind coach who revolutionized the sports program by bringing in the Australian sports systems way of doing things into the program.

So why can’t our sport’s director and every sport’s officials of our beloved country “ZERO-IN” in reforming the whole sports system of the country through hiring world class coaches to train our Filipino athletes and to reestablish a nation wide sports program focus just like the GINTONG ALAY concept, goals, and vision for the nation. I know the answer… Almost everyone (The government sports officials of the country) are just busy snatching bits of pieces of jewels in the sports programs budget that will make them rich. That is bad and that is very sad to know. I know, because I was once an athlete in the Philippines and I have experienced and have seen bad practices that demoralizes or hampers the athletes of our country to excel in their sports events.
We Filipinos are very gifted in excelling to different kinds of sports events. We can be world class athletes – WORLD CHAMPIONS, it’s just we do not want to do the right thing!
Manny Pacquiao has 8 WORLD TITLES in the world of boxing. Thank’s to his world class coach Freddy R. He will not achieve those titles without his world class coach (Freddy R.) ability and experiences to bring him to achieve all those titles.
If there is a word we can describe the Philippine Sports Leaders of our nation that is the word “DAH,” slung for “No Brainer, Selfish or plain DUM.” When Manong? ?Mama sita, donde sus Santa Claus? Hah?

I think depth is just not if not important than coaching Armand. If you get a good group of athletes together competing against each other of course there performance is going to improve. Agreed on the second comment their is a lot of self-interest vested in the sport. I could probably fill a book on experiences lol. What about the hard work and dedication Pacquio put in??? doesnt that count.

We my have different perspectives about the subject matter, but the performance achievements of our world class athletes like Pacman is a combination of his hard work, international exposures in competition and the most important one is his world class coach (Freddy R.). You just said it, that when Anthony Benson (An Australian runner coach) applied his knowledge about how Australian runners train, that there is the proof that world class coaches are the major key for our athletes to reach the caliber of being world class champions in their specific sport events. Another proof example is the achievements of the AZCALS (A Philippine Soccer football team of the country) in their sport event. Their coach is German and he is a world class caliber football coach.
Mohamed Farah and Gelan Rupp will not achieve the one two position in the 10,000 meters men’s Olympic finals if they did not have one of the best running coach in the world (Alberto Salazar). Alberto Salazar trained and inspired them to achieve the impossible to be possible. Today, we do have promising athletes but their fate will not achieve world class level achievements without world class level coaches to train, mentor, and inspire them to achieve the impossible which can be possible to their sports career. Sayang ang GINTONG ALAY program, hindi ipinagpatuloy dahil sa matinding galit kay Marcos at sa katindihang kasakiman ng mga sports officials natin sa pagnanakaw sa budget ng Sports Program ng Pilipinas. Kailan patayo matututo? Di Na Natuto! Napagiiwanan na tayo ng panahon… Ay Panahon!
